Stephen King’s net worth is estimated at $330 million as of November 2026. In 1997 he asked for $18 million to publish a single novel, was turned down, and took a $2 million advance with a 55/45 profit split in his favor instead. He has since said he should have asked for a dollar a book. The horror author’s money comes from 50 years of novels and the films made from them, and a surprising amount has already been given away.

How much is Stephen King worth in 2026?

We estimate about $330 million, with a wide range of $250 million to $500 million, because most of it rests on assumptions. King has been married to Tabitha King since January 2, 1971, and their money is shared, so this is a household figure. We credit it to him because the income comes from his books. Almost nothing about his contracts is public beyond a few famous deals.

How Stephen King built it

  • Traded a big advance for profits. He took $2 million and a 55/45 split on Bag of Bones after asking for $18 million.
  • Kept publishing for decades. His 2026 novel Other Worlds Than These came more than 50 years after Carrie.
  • Gave money through a foundation. The King foundation paid out $7.2 million in charitable disbursements in 2024.

How we got to $330 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Writing income, 1974 to 1996, after tax $44 million Assumption: about $4 million a year for 22 years, or $88 million, and half kept. It starts with a $400,000 paperback sale for Carrie and reaches advance demands of about $16 million by the 1990s.
Writing and screen income, 1997 to 2026, after tax $270 million Assumption: $18 million a year for 30 years, or $540 million, and half kept. Statista’s compilation shows $27 million and $17 million for the two years ending June 2019.
Giving through the family foundation minus $67 million Documented in part. IRS data shows $56.4 million in contributions across 13 filed years, 2011 to 2024, and asset figures that imply at least $10.3 million more in 2017, the missing year. We assume the Kings gave it. Earlier giving isn’t counted, and we ignore any tax deduction.
Spending, homes and radio stations minus $60 million Assumption: $2 million a year for 30 years, covering three homes and radio stations he said were losing money. No home has its own row, as they were bought from this income.
Investment returns $141 million Assumption. The rows above leave $187 million. We assume half, $94 million, invested on average for 30 years at 5 percent.

Total: $328 million, which we round to $330 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented, and returns alone are over 40 percent of the total.

What $18 million per book really meant

Reactor’s reread of Bag of Bones lays out the 1997 fight. King’s advance demands had reached about $16 million, for books selling about 1.2 million copies. For Bag of Bones he wanted $18 million. Scribner gave him $2 million and the split, printed 1.36 million copies, and sold about 1.55 million.

Our calculation: $18 million over 1.55 million copies is $11.61 per copy, an advance that would have needed every buyer to hand over a big slice of the cover price before the publisher saw a cent. Viking’s hesitation makes more sense with that sum on the page. His later line about a dollar a book makes the same point from the other side: at $1 a copy, that novel earns $1.55 million.

The first deal looked very different. One history of Carrie records a $2,500 advance from Doubleday in the 1970s and then $400,000 from New American Library for paperback rights, 160 times as much. The hardcover sold 13,000 copies. The paperback sold more than a million in a year.

The $67 million that left the building

ProPublica’s copy of the foundation’s IRS filings shows the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation with $16.2 million in assets and $7.2 million in charitable disbursements in 2024, after $4 million in contributions that year. King and Tabitha King, president and secretary, are paid $0. Contributions from 2011 to 2024 add to $56.4 million. The 2017 filing is missing from the data, but assets went from $30,665 at the end of 2016 to $10.2 million at the end of 2018, so at least $10.3 million more went in. That makes about $67 million, or about 20 percent of our headline, by our math. Public estimates that run far above ours tend to skip this, and tend to treat yearly earnings as if no tax came out of them.

Radio, homes and a new book

The couple’s Zone Corporation bought a Bangor radio station in 1983 and later added others. In December 2024 King said they would close at the end of the year, citing his age and financial losses, and one, WKIT, was to be sold instead. The couple splits time among homes in Bangor, Lovell and Sarasota, and as of 2019 planned to turn the Bangor house into an archive and writers’ retreat.

The latest money news came in October 2026. His own site lists Other Worlds Than These, the Talisman finale written with Peter Straub, on October 6, and Mike Flanagan’s Carrie series on Prime Video on October 7, with King as executive producer. Adaptations don’t always pay off for the studios: The Running Man grossed $68.6 million worldwide against a $110 million budget, The Numbers shows. King’s rights fees aren’t public, which is the main reason this estimate is so wide.

What would move the figure: renewed Carrie seasons, how the Talisman finale sells, and the 27 backlist titles that moved to Scribner in a 2015 agreement with undisclosed terms.
