How much is Michael Crichton worth in 2026?

He died in 2008, so this is a figure for what he left, and we put it at $160 million, within a range of $100 million to $300 million. This one is a rough estimate. Only the art sale is well documented, the TV money comes from one side’s account, and his book royalties are our assumption. Money earned since his death belongs to his heirs and is left out.

The public estimates we saw in search results start near $200 million and climb to $600 million. The higher ones seem to count the whole life of ER as money he had banked, without much tax, although that show ran until 2009 and he died in 2008.

How Michael Crichton built it

  • Bought Flag from the artist. He bought Jasper Johns's Flag from the artist, and it sold for $28.6 million in 2010.
  • Kept a share of the upside. He held a backend on ER that his estate's lawyers put near $800,000 an episode.
  • Sold rights at a high price. He took $1.5 million for Jurassic Park's film rights and $500,000 to adapt the novel.

How we got to $160 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Art collection, after sale costs $79 million The Christie’s sale of May 2010 brought about $93.3 million in one report, and one auction account totals $103.3 million. We use the lower number and assume 85 percent reached the seller.
Book royalties $150 million Assumption: $0.75 a copy on more than 200 million sold, blending hardcovers, paperbacks and translations. The count includes some posthumous sales, so this may run high.
ER backend paid by 2008 $159 million Lawyers for his estate put the backend at about $800,000 an episode, roughly $264.8 million over 331 episodes. That is their account, not an audited figure. We assume 60 percent had reached him when he died.
Film rights and screen work $40 million Documented deals add up to $3.75 million: $250,000 for The Andromeda Strain and $1.5 million for Congo, plus $1.5 million and $500,000 for Jurassic Park. We assume the rest, including his undisclosed percentage of Jurassic Park and other films.
Tax and agents minus $175 million Assumption: half of the $349 million in the three earnings rows above.
Returns on saved money $30 million Assumption: $50 million invested on average, 3 percent a year after tax, for 20 years.
Living costs minus $120 million Assumption: $4 million a year for the 30 years before his death, a high figure that we use because he collected art seriously for decades.
Total $160 million The rows sum to $163 million, which we round down. Most of this ledger is assumption.

The painting that out-earned the dinosaur deal

The art sold after his death, 31 lots with none left unsold, and Flag alone made $28,642,500 against a $10 million to $15 million estimate. He had bought it from Johns directly, almost 40 years earlier.

By our calculation, $28.6 million divided by the $2 million he took for Jurassic Park’s rights and script is 14.3. A film that has grossed $1.058 billion paid him $2 million up front, and one painting from his house beat that 14 to 1. The percentage he got on top has not been published. The whole collection, at $79 million after costs, is 48 percent of the $163 million our rows sum to, so close to half this fortune was sitting on his walls.

Two episodes of ER

The ER number deserves suspicion and it still changes the picture. At $800,000 an episode, two episodes pay $1.6 million, more than Hollywood’s headline price for Jurassic Park’s rights. The show ran from 1994 to 2009, and backend money tends to arrive late, once a series is sold on. That is why we credit only 60 percent to his lifetime and leave the other $106 million, by our math, to the estate.

His early novels ran on a different scale. Easy Go earned him $1,500.

What the estate is still selling

A Murder in Hollywood, a John Lange novel never published in his lifetime, came out from Blackstone on May 5, 2026. Eruption, finished with James Patterson, was released on June 3, 2024. Jurassic World Rebirth took $872.4 million worldwide in 2025, though what his estate gets from the franchise now is not public.

New books and film deals move what his heirs have and leave the figure at his death alone. The evidence that could change our estimate is a published value for the estate or the actual royalty statements. Neither has surfaced in anything we could open.
