How much is John Green worth in 2026?
Our figure is $34 million, inside a range of $20 million to $55 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. His royalty rate and film contracts have never been published, so we start from copies sold and two years of reported pay, and we mark every assumption below.
The public estimates we saw in search listings run from about $17 million to about $50 million, and we found none that shows its sums. The usual gaps are pre-tax pay treated as money kept and nothing taken off for the charity pledges his family has made.
How John Green built it
- Wrote one breakout novel. The Fault in Our Stars accounts for nearly half of his more than 50 million copies sold.
- Signed books by the hundred thousand. He signed 875,557 tip-in sheets, a Guinness record presented in September 2026.
- Sent store profits to charity. The Good Store had donated over $10 million in operating profits as of August 2025.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Books, all formats | $50 million | More than 50 million copies sold, Kirkus reported in September 2026, at an assumed $1.00 a copy across hardcovers, paperbacks, ebooks and foreign editions. His publisher says over 60 million are in print, but printed is not sold, so we use the lower number. |
| Film and TV rights | $8 million | Assumption. No contract is public. The 2014 film of his best-known novel grossed $307 million on a $12 million budget, and Paper Towns, Looking for Alaska and Let It Snow were also adapted. An author usually sees a small slice of that. |
| YouTube, podcasts, talks | $5.5 million | Vlogbrothers has 1 billion views. At an assumed $2 per 1,000 views that is $2 million, and half to him is $1 million. We add an assumed $300,000 a year for 15 years of podcasts, talks and tours, or $4.5 million. |
| Tax and agents | minus $28.6 million | Assumption: 45 percent of the $63.5 million above, for income tax plus commissions. |
| Charity pledges | minus $5.25 million | Half of $10.5 million. The brothers and their families announced $6.5 million for Sierra Leone in 2019 and pledged $1 million a year through 2027 in March 2024, or $4 million. The split between families is not public, so we charge him half. |
| Living costs | minus $5.6 million | Assumption: $400,000 a year for the 14 years from 2012 to 2026. |
| Investment gains | $9.6 million | Assumption: the $36 million of reported pay below, less 45 percent, leaves about $20 million by 2016. At 4 percent for 10 years, 20 times 1.04 to the 10th power is about $29.6 million, a gain of $9.6 million. |
| Total | $34 million | The rows sum to $33.65 million, which we round. |
Complexly, the company behind Crash Course, gets no row. He is listed as co-founder and strategic advisor, but we found no ownership split or valuation to work from.
$36 million while no new novel was on sale
Forbes’s yearly table of top-earning authors counts pre-tax pay. Libreriamo reported Green at $26 million on the 2015 list, whose window ran from June 2014 to June 2015, with his best seller selling over 3.5 million copies in 2014. For June 2015 to June 2016, Shelf Awareness reported $10 million. His previous novel had come out in January 2012, and the next would not arrive until October 2017.
That is $36 million in 24 months. Set against our lifetime gross of $63.5 million, it comes to 57 percent, by our calculation. The film did the heavy lifting: it opened on June 6, 2014, right at the start of that window. These were outside estimates of pay, so treat the share as a guide and not an audit.
One book explains much of it. Kirkus says The Fault in Our Stars accounts for nearly half of all copies sold, so call it 25 million. At our assumed $1.00, that is about $25 million, or 39 percent of everything we think he has ever grossed. It began with a first printing of 150,000 copies, every one signed.
The profits that skip his bank account
The Good Store sells socks, coffee and soap, and had donated over $10 million in operating profits as of August 2025. None of that appears in our ledger, because it was never his income. Had half of it been his, he would hold about $2.75 million more today: 10 times 0.5 times 0.55, using our 45 percent tax rate.
The pledges that do come out of family money take about 15 percent of our final figure ($5.25 million against $34 million). Then there is AFC Wimbledon, the English football club he sponsors, whose shorts have carried a Nerdfighters emblem since 2014. In January 2025 he helped arrange the transfer of a player named Marcus Browne, partly paid for with his livestreaming earnings. Few novelists have a line like that in their spending.
What Hollywood, Ending could change
Penguin Random House announced the novel on April 1, 2026 and published it on September 22, 2026. It is his first novel for adults and his first since Turtles All the Way Down, which had an initial run of 1.5 million copies. We found no sales figure yet. He says he spent eight years developing it.
Each extra million copies at $1.00 adds about $550,000 after our tax rate, so 5 million would move the total by $2.75 million, or roughly 8 percent. A screen deal could matter more, and we have no number for one.
