How much is Colleen Hoover worth in 2026?

Our figure is $30 million, inside a range of $15 million to $45 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. We could not find a published advance, royalty rate or film fee, so the number rests on copy counts and on what we assume each copy pays her.

Public estimates disagree because the key input is private. Move our rate from $1 to $2 a copy and film pay from $6 million to $20 million, and the result runs from about $15 million to about $45 million. Copy totals also differ: Circana counts print sales at reporting outlets, which leaves out most ebooks and audio.

How Colleen Hoover built it

  • Uploaded the first novel herself. She self-published Slammed in January 2012 while working in child protective services.
  • Moved the backlist to cinemas. Four of her novels reached cinemas from 2024 to 2026 and took about $701 million.
  • Took on film credits. She holds producing credits on four films and wrote the Reminders of Him screenplay.

How 40 million books turn into $30 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Books in all formats $60 million TODAY reported upwards of 20 million copies per Circana in June 2023. Assumption: another 20 million from later sales, ebooks, audio and translations. Assumption: $1.50 a copy, between publisher royalties and Amazon’s 70 percent option on eligible self-published ebooks.
Film and TV rights, producing $12 million Assumption: $3 million on average across four films. Hoover said she licensed It Ends with Us to Justin Baldoni and Verity to Amazon. No fee has been published.
Agents and fees Minus $11 million Assumption: 15 percent of $72 million, which is $10.8 million.
Income tax Minus $21 million Assumption: 35 percent of the remaining $61.2 million, which is $21.4 million.
Living costs and giving Minus $10 million Assumption: $700,000 a year for 14 years since 2012, which is $9.8 million.
Total $30 million Mostly assumptions, on purpose. Only the copy count and the film results are documented.

One year did 43 percent of the work

TODAY reported more than 8.6 million print copies sold in 2022, more than J.K. Rowling, James Patterson, Stephen King and John Grisham combined. Against the 20 million lifetime count from the same report, that is 43 percent (8.6 divided by 20, our calculation). At our assumed $1.50, 2022 print sales alone paid her about $12.9 million before fees and tax, more than the $12 million we credit her for all four films.

The peak has passed. Publishers Weekly counted about 3.4 million copies in 2023 for three of her titles together, with Verity above 935,000. That still works out to roughly $5.1 million at our rate.

$701 million at the box office, and a very small slice

Film Worldwide gross Budget
It Ends with Us (2024) $349.7 million $25 million
Regretting You (2025) $90.4 million $30 million
Reminders of Him (2026) $89.2 million $25 million
Verity (2026) $171.7 million $40 million

Those grosses, as The Numbers listed them on November 3, 2026, add to about $701 million on $120 million of budgets. Our $12 million for Hoover is 1.7 percent of the box office, by our math, and most of the gross belongs to cinemas and studios. Her credits grew as the deals did: executive producer on the first two, screenwriter and producer on Reminders of Him, producer on Verity. Any profit share in those credits has not been disclosed, so it stays out of our ledger.

From a light bill to Amazon Publishing

Hoover wrote Slammed while living in a trailer and working in child protective services. NPR reported that six strangers bought it at first, then 60, which was enough for her to tell her mother she could pay the light bill. Seven months after that January 2012 upload, a traditional publisher had reissued it.

The bookstore and subscription service she founded in 2015 works the other way. NPR reported that it sells signed copies to raise money for charity, so we count no income from it.

Her latest new novel went to a different home. Woman Down was set for January 13, 2026, through Amazon Publishing, the most recent book event we could date. Reminders of Him followed in cinemas on March 13, 2026, and Verity on October 2, 2026.

What would move the number

Two things could push it up. One is whether Verity sends new readers to the 2018 novel and the older backlist. The other is a disclosed film profit share, since even 1 percent of $701 million would be about $7 million before costs. A further slide from the 2022 sales peak would pull it the other way.
