Khaled Hosseini’s net worth is estimated at $30 million as of November 2026. He was still a full-time doctor when The Kite Runner took off, and if the reported $500,000 advance is right, it was covered after about 1.3 percent of the copies his first two novels went on to sell. Those two books have sold more than 38 million copies worldwide, and they account for most of what follows.

How much is Khaled Hosseini worth in 2026?

We put him at $30 million, in a range of $17 million to $43 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. One advance has been reported, and no royalty rate. Move our $1 a copy to $0.50 or $1.50 and you get the two ends of the range.

Public estimates disagree by a factor of eight, from about $5 million to about $40 million. The gap comes from the same blind spot: nobody outside knows what a copy pays him, and the sales count most people quote is from 2013.

How Khaled Hosseini built it

  • Kept practising medicine after publishing. He stayed a doctor for about a year and a half after The Kite Runner came out.
  • Took years between novels. He published novels in 2003, 2007 and 2013, and they logged 237 weeks on bestseller lists.
  • Gave book proceeds away. Author proceeds from Sea Prayer go to the UN refugee agency and his foundation.

How 55 million copies turn into $30 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Books in all formats $55 million A Riverhead publicist told Publishers Weekly in 2013 that the first two novels had sold over 38 million copies worldwide. Assumption: 17 million more since, including And the Mountains Echoed. Assumption: $1 per copy across formats and 57 languages.
Kite Runner film rights $1 million Assumption: 5 percent of the film’s $20 million budget. No fee has been published.
Medicine $1 million Assumption: $150,000 a year for 7 years, from the end of his residency in 1997 to about 2004.
Speaking $1 million Assumption: 50 paid talks at $20,000. No fee has been published.
Agents and fees Minus $8.4 million Assumption: 15 percent of $56 million from books and film.
Income tax Minus $22.3 million Assumption: 45 percent of the remaining $49.6 million, a top California bracket.
Giving Minus $2 million Assumption: he covered most of the over $2.2 million in grants his foundation reports.
Living costs Minus $4 million Assumption: $200,000 a year for 20 years.
Investment growth $8.9 million Assumption: $10 million of after-tax money invested in 2013 at 5 percent for 13 years, which becomes $18.9 million.
Total $30 million Rows sum to $30.2 million, rounded here.

The advance was the cheap part

The Globe and Mail reported a $500,000 advance, a sum we have only from that one report. The bet paid off fast. Publishers Weekly reported in April 2005 a first printing of 50,000 and an in-print total near 1,386,250 after 17 reprints, with the hardcover at about 70,000 shipped.

Now our calculation. At $1 a copy, a $500,000 advance is earned back after 500,000 copies. That is 1.3 percent of the 38 million reported for the first two novels (500,000 divided by 38 million). Everything beyond that point paid through as royalties, and books are about 95 percent of our gross figure ($55 million of $58 million).

The film barely matters by comparison. It took $73.2 million worldwide against a $20 million budget, and our $1 million for the rights is under 2 percent of the gross.

Twenty years of backlist

He has published slowly: novels in 2003, 2007 and 2013, then Sea Prayer, an illustrated short story, in 2018. His own site says A Thousand Splendid Suns had 1,255,000 copies in print in the U.S. in its first week. Wikipedia counts 101 weeks on the New York Times list for The Kite Runner, 103 for A Thousand Splendid Suns and 33 for And the Mountains Echoed.

The third novel opened strong too, with more than 150,000 copies in its first weeks by Publishers Weekly’s June 2013 count. We assume the backlist still sells about 1.3 million copies a year worldwide (17 million over 13 years). That assumption drives the income figure in the table above.

The latest money event is one he gave away

We found no book deal or sale from 2025 or 2026. The latest documented book is Sea Prayer in 2018, and its author proceeds go to the UN refugee agency and his foundation, so it adds nothing to our ledger. The foundation, started in 2008, says on its site as of November 2026 that it has funded 537 shelters housing more than 3,200 people, with more than $2.2 million in grants. A literary award biography has him living in northern California, which is why we use a California tax rate.

What would move the figure: a fourth novel. Every extra 1 million copies at $1 adds about $467,500 after agents and tax ($1 million, less 15 percent, less 45 percent). A published sales total newer than 2013 would also replace our largest assumption.
