Early life and background

Kenny Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to a former elementary school teacher and a hairstylist, and grew up in Luttrell. He attended Gibbs High School, where he played baseball and football, and graduated in 1986.

He received his first guitar as a Christmas present and taught himself to play. He sold 1,000 copies of his demo while performing in clubs in Johnson City, then studied advertising at East Tennessee State University, where he joined the bluegrass program.

After graduating in 1990 he moved to Nashville and worked as a resident performer at a honky tonk called The Turf. An audition for Opryland Music Group led to a songwriting contract, and then a record deal with Capricorn Records.
