Shania Twain was born Eilleen Regina Edwards in Windsor, Ontario, to Sharon and Clarence Edwards. After her parents divorced she moved to Timmins with her mother, who later married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa man from the nearby Mattagami First Nation. He adopted Shania and her sister.

The family had little money. Twain began singing in bars at eight to help earn extra income and wrote her first songs at ten. At 13 she was invited to perform on the Tommy Hunter Show on CBC television.

She sang with a local Top 40 cover band called Longshot while attending Timmins High and Vocational School, and worked for her father’s reforestation business.
