How much is Kumar Mangalam Birla worth in 2026?

Our figure is $18 billion, within a range of $14 billion to $22 billion. This is a family figure, and we say so because the family’s shares are registered mainly to holding companies such as Birla Group Holdings and IGH Holdings, plus individual lines for his mother, wife and three children. Nobody publishes who owns what inside those companies. We credit the total to him because he heads the group and the family’s holdings move as one block in the filings, so read it as what he controls, not what he could spend alone. Shares in his own name come to about ?1,515 crore, or about $160 million, by our calculation at November 3 prices, using the holding tables and a June 2026 tally for the smaller names.

Public estimates tend to run higher. Some add the whole promoter line at each company, which counts cross-holdings twice, and some add unlisted businesses at values nobody has disclosed.

How Kumar Mangalam Birla built it

  • Took over young. He became group chairman at 28 in 1995, after his father died.
  • Grew the group for decades. Group turnover rose from $2 billion in 1995 to about $70 billion by August 2026.
  • Kept the family buying shares. The family bought 13.68 million Grasim shares between February 2024 and September 2026.

How we got to $18 billion

Prices are from November 3, 2026. Rupees are converted at 95.02 to the dollar, the early November 2026 average on X-Rates. One crore is 10 million.

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Grasim $9.03 billion 45.20 percent promoter holding for September 2026, less the 4.29 percent owned by Hindalco, leaves 40.91 percent. Applied to a ?2,09,809 crore market value, that is ?85,833 crore.
Hindalco $6.62 billion 34.67 percent promoter holding, less 3.92 percent held by Grasim, leaves 30.75 percent. Applied to a ?2,04,453 crore market value, that is ?62,869 crore.
Aditya Birla Capital, direct $1.81 billion 68.82 percent promoter holding, less the 52.3 percent Grasim holds, leaves 16.52 percent. Applied to a ?1,04,181 crore market value, that is ?17,211 crore.
UltraTech, lines outside Grasim and Hindalco $0.70 billion 58.48 percent promoter holding, less Grasim’s 56.11 percent and Hindalco’s 0.43 percent, which are already inside those companies’ prices, leaves 1.94 percent. Applied to a ?3,42,700 crore market value, that is ?6,648 crore. It includes his own 611,500 shares and some holders with outside shareholders.
Total $18.2 billion, which we round to $18 billion $9.03 billion + $6.62 billion + $1.81 billion + $0.70 billion.

The $1.8 billion that gets counted twice

Grasim and Hindalco own pieces of each other. Hindalco holds 4.29 percent of Grasim and Grasim holds 3.92 percent of Hindalco, and both stakes sit inside the promoter lines people quote. Our calculation: 4.29 percent of Grasim is ?9,001 crore and 3.92 percent of Hindalco is ?8,015 crore. Together that is ?17,016 crore, or about $1.8 billion, which appears once as a stake and again inside the market value of the company holding it. We removed it.

UltraTech is the bigger trap. Grasim held 56.11 percent of it in September 2026, the shareholding table shows, so anyone adding UltraTech to Grasim counts the same cement business twice.

A family still buying

A filing disclosed on September 28, 2026 showed the family bought 13,682,270 Grasim shares on the open market between February 7, 2024 and September 24, 2026, lifting its holding from 43.06 percent to 45.07 percent. By our math, at ?3,083 a share those purchases are worth about ?4,218 crore today, or about $444 million. Birla’s own line at UltraTech also rose, from 284,390 shares to 611,500 in a year.

Birla took over at 28, in 1995, after his father died, when group turnover was $2 billion. The group now claims about $70 billion, across 40 countries. Turnover isn’t wealth. After cross-holdings, the family’s lines are 40.91 percent of Grasim and 30.75 percent of Hindalco.

What we left out, and what would move it

Unlisted family businesses, homes and cash have no row, because we opened no document that prices them. Nor do the family’s holdings in smaller listed names such as Vodafone Idea, where his personal line was ?17.4 crore in June 2026. That is why our range runs up to $22 billion. Some promoter holders, such as Thai Rayon Public Company, also have outside shareholders, and we made no deduction for that. A 20 percent market fall alone would take the figure to about $14 billion, the bottom of our range.

Two near events matter: Hindalco reports results on November 6, 2026, and Grasim’s renewables arm agreed in July 2026 to buy Solenergi Power from Shell at an enterprise value of ?172 billion. Every 10 percent move in Grasim and Hindalco together changes our figure by about $1.6 billion.
