How much is Larry Fink worth in 2026?
We put Fink’s net worth at about $470 million. It is a rough estimate: only his share count and a few years of pay are documented, and the rest is our assumption. Our figure gives no credit for any stake he held before the 1999 listing, because we found no number for it, so it may be low.
Public estimates disagree for a plain reason: some multiply BlackRock’s market value by a guessed ownership percentage, while the company’s own filings put his holding far below that.
How Larry Fink built it
- Learned from a big loss. A 1986 interest-rate call cost his First Boston desk $100 million, and he started BlackRock two years later.
- Built through big mergers. BlackRock doubled in size with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in 2006 and Barclays Global Investors in 2009.
- Took the firm public. BlackRock listed in 1999, ten years after its founding in 1988.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| BlackRock shares and units held | $248 million | A July 2026 SEC Form 4 shows 215,979 shares owned directly after a gift of 7,852 shares on 21 July. The total includes restricted stock units. a market data page showed a last close of $1,147.54 on 30 October 2026. 215,979 times $1,147.54 is $247.9 million. Other holdings, such as trusts or family accounts, are not in the filing. |
| Cash pay since 1999, after tax | $119 million | Documented pay: $23.6 million in 2010 and $36 million in 2021 per Wikipedia, and $30.8 million for 2024 and $37.7 million for 2025 per Reuters via MarketScreener. Assumption: an average of $25 million a year over 27 years, or $675 million. About 32 percent was cash (2025 salary and bonus were $12.1 million of $37.7 million), which is $216 million, and we assume 45 percent goes to tax, leaving $119 million. |
| Stock pay already sold, after tax | $126 million | Assumption. The other 68 percent of pay, $459 million, was stock. We assume half was sold and taxed at 45 percent: $230 million before tax, $126 million after. The half still held is counted in the first row. |
| Homes | $35 million | Wikipedia lists a farm in North Salem, New York, bought in 2004 for $3.7 million with more land added since, an Upper East Side apartment and an Aspen house. No prices are public beyond the farm, so $35 million is an allowance. |
| Living costs and giving since 1999 | -$54 million | Assumption: $2 million a year for 27 years. |
| Total | $470 million | 248 + 119 + 126 + 35 – 54 = 474, rounded to $470 million. |
Our calculation: 215,979 shares out of about 154.9 million outstanding is 0.14 percent of BlackRock. The shares are worth about 6.6 years of his 2025 pay of $37.7 million. Pay therefore matters about as much as the shares themselves, which is unusual for the head of a company worth about $177 billion.
A $100 million bad day, and a company that came out of it
According to Wikipedia, Fink started at First Boston in 1976, and in 1986 his department lost $100 million after he predicted interest rates wrongly. In 1988 he co-founded what became BlackRock under the Blackstone umbrella. It split from Blackstone in 1994, went public in 1999, merged with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in 2006, which doubled its asset management business, and bought Barclays Global Investors in December 2009. That made it the largest money manager in the world, with more than $10 trillion under management today.
What the 2026 filings show
For 2025 BlackRock paid Fink $37.7 million, up about 22 percent from $30.8 million a year earlier, with a $1.5 million salary and a $10.6 million bonus; stock awards made up much of the rest. The BlackRock proxy statement uses a different measure, total annual compensation of $45 million, which includes equity granted in January 2026 and is not the same as reported pay. It also mentions a separate carried-interest incentive that it does not value in the part we read, and we give it no credit. The July 2026 filings show a small sale of 1,905 shares at $1,080.57 on 16 July (about $2.1 million, per a SEC Form 4) and the gift of 7,852 shares five days later.
What would move the figure
BlackRock’s share price is the biggest lever. At $1,147.54 a share, a 10 percent move changes his stake by about $25 million. The shares traded between $917.39 and $1,187.17 over the past year, which on his holding is a swing of about $58 million. Vesting of new grants and any further sales or gifts will matter more than a change in his salary.
