He wrote one of the best-selling self-help books ever, and for the last 30 years of his life the royalties were not his: they stayed with Rosa Lee Beeland after their 1940 divorce. Her name had been on them since before the split.

How much is Napoleon Hill worth in 2026?

A dead author has no 2026 bank balance, so our figure is what he left, restated at $8.68 today for each 1970 dollar, a CPI conversion. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. We opened no probate file, no royalty statement and no contract, so most of the table is assumption.

Public estimates go from about $1 million to $10 million or more. The low end is a figure at his death, in 1970 dollars, which our bottom-up $850,000 sits close to. Higher figures seem to mix in later book sales, which went to others and not to him.

How Napoleon Hill built it

  • Rebuilt after going broke. He lost a 600-acre Catskills property in 1929 and published his biggest book in 1937.
  • Partnered to sell success courses. He and W. Clement Stone taught lectures together from 1952 to 1962.
  • Started a foundation for his ideas. He set up his foundation in 1963, and it reported $1.78 million in revenue for 2025.

How we got to $7.4 million

Each row is what we think he kept, in 1970 dollars, then multiplied by 8.68.

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Book royalties after 1940 $0 Beeland kept them. After the book he bought a Florida estate, and we assume whatever he made from 1937 to 1940 was largely gone after the split.
Courses and lectures with W. Clement Stone $2.2 million Assumption: $25,000 a year kept, in 1970 dollars, for the 1952 to 1962 partnership, or $250,000. The terms aren’t public.
Later books and course licences $2.6 million Assumption: $10,000 a year kept for 30 years, 1940 to 1970, or $300,000. This covers The Law of Success, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude (1960) and Science of Success franchises.
Returns on those savings $2.6 million Assumption: 3 percent a year for 15 years on the $550,000 above comes to about $300,000. This row includes any home.
Total $7.4 million Rows add to $7.4 million, about $850,000 in 1970 dollars.

Rich, broke and rich again in nine years

Hill’s early companies, including a lumber business, an automobile college, an advertising school and a candy shop, closed or pushed him out, and none left lasting money. The Law of Success came out in 1928. By 1929 he had a Rolls-Royce and a 600-acre Catskills property, and the Depression took the land to foreclosure before that year ended. Biographers also dispute parts of his own life story, including the famous meeting with Andrew Carnegie.

Think and Grow Rich arrived in 1937, and Beeland contributed substantially to writing and editing it. We assume it paid him well for about three years.

Four cents a copy

Nobody agrees how many copies sold. Hill’s biographers claimed about 20 million over 50 years, a 1995 Fortune headline said 10 million, and writer Richard Lingeman suggested the true count was considerably less. Divide our $850,000 by 20 million and his estate works out to about 4 cents a copy, by our calculation, or 8.5 cents at 10 million. Neither is a royalty rate. It’s a measure of how little of the book’s sales ended up with the man whose name is on the cover.

The foundation out-earned him

Hill set up the Napoleon Hill Foundation in 1963. Its IRS filings, published by ProPublica, show revenue of $1,784,740 for tax year 2025 and net assets of $3,223,190, the latest figures we could open. By our math, revenue from 2011 to 2025 adds up to $18.6 million, about 2.5 times our $7.4 million. One year of it is about twice the $850,000 we think he left. The summaries don’t split royalties from other income, so treat that as a comparison of scale.

What would move the figure

A probate record from South Carolina would replace nearly every row. The Stone contract would settle the largest assumption. Until then the number changes only with inflation.
