How much is Richard Osman Worth? Richard Osman Net Worth in 2026
Richard Osman’s net worth is estimated at $16 million as of November 2026. That is about £12 million at the November 2026 average so far of $1.34 to the pound. Readers had already spent £25 million on 3.1 million of his books by September 2022, which sounds like a fortune until you work out how little of a cover price reaches the writer. The man who co-hosted Pointless for 13 years now makes most of his money, by our ledger, from a retirement village full of amateur detectives.

How much is Richard Osman worth in 2026?
We put him at $16 million, within a range of $9 million to $26 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. Sales are public. His royalty rate, television pay and rights fees are not, so those rows are our assumptions.
Public estimates tend to run higher and show no arithmetic. The usual reason for the gap is tax. At the 45 percent we assume, keeping £20 million after tax takes about £36 million before it (20 divided by 0.55, our math).
How Richard Osman built it
- Built a career inside television. He was creative director at Endemol UK and pitched Pointless before presenting it.
- Published a first novel at 49. The Thursday Murder Club came out in September 2020, after a seven-figure auction deal.
- Kept the rights working. Film rights went to Amblin and We Solve Murders screen rights went to Netflix.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Books worldwide | $20 million | His agency says over 17 million copies worldwide in 2025. Assumption: 11 percent of the £8.06 average sale price below, which is £0.89 or $1.19 a copy. The result is $20.2 million. |
| Film and TV rights | $3 million | The agency lists Amblin for The Thursday Murder Club and Netflix for We Solve Murders. Fees are private. The $3 million is our assumption, including his executive producer credit on the 2025 film. |
| Television career | $10 million | Assumption: $500,000 a year for about 20 years. He was creative director at Endemol UK until 2020 and on Pointless from 2009 to 2022. No pay figure has been published. |
| Podcasting | $2 million | Assumption: about $650,000 a year for three years of The Rest Is Entertainment, from a company with £37.9 million of 2025 sales. His share is not public. |
| Income tax | Minus $16 million | Assumption: 45 percent of the $35 million above, which is $15.75 million. |
| Living costs | Minus $3 million | Assumption: $150,000 a year for 20 years. |
| Total | $16 million | Mostly assumptions, and we would rather say so. We add no investment gains because nothing about his savings is public. |
What an £8 book pays
His agency’s announcement of the four-book deal said he had sold 3.1 million books for £25 million in the UK, per Nielsen BookScan. That is £8.06 a book. A year later the New Statesman reported more than £35 million on over 4.5 million copies, or £7.78, so the price held steady. At our assumed 11 percent he would have seen about £2.75 million of that first £25 million before tax, by our calculation. His agency separately announced over 5 million copies in the UK and Ireland in October 2022, so counts vary by method. We take only the price per book from these tallies.
Six years of novels beat two decades of TV
Osman spent his career in television, and in our ledger that career pays $10 million across about 20 years. Novels and the rights attached to them pay $23 million from a first book published in September 2020. That is 66 percent of everything we credit him with before tax (23 divided by 35, our calculation), from a single late career decision.
The decision had an early signal. The Bookseller reported a seven-figure deal after a 10-way auction in May 2019, covering the debut and one more novel. We treat that advance as part of the book row, because advances are normally paid against royalties. The first novel went on to become the UK’s bestselling title of 2020, and the New Statesman called it the only book to sell a million copies in its release year.
He left the quiz shows, and the money follows the books
In March 2026, he announced his exit from House of Games after more than 800 episodes, and Michael Sheen took over that October. We Chase Shadows, his second We Solve Murders novel, arrived on September 15, 2026. Our sales count dates from 2025, so copies of that book are not in the ledger yet.
What would move the number
A screen version of We Solve Murders at Netflix would add rights money and another round of book sales. The figure would also rise if he owns any part of the podcast company, which we could not establish. The end of his House of Games pay works in the other direction, although it is small next to one novel’s sales.
