Ridley Scott is an English director and producer, and his current net worth is $200 million.
Born in South Shields, England, before the Second World War in an army family. They moved around and lived in countries like Wales and Germany eventually settling in Hartburn, County Durham. This industrial landscape inspired scenes in Blade Runner.
He went to Grangefield Grammar School and West Hartlepool College of Art obtaining a diploma in design. While studying at the Royal College of Art in London, he established the film department.
After graduating in 1963, he got a job at the BBC as a trainee set designer. This led to working on Z-Cars and Out of the Unknown.
Him and his brother, Tony, founded a film and commercial production company named Ridley Scott Associates. Ridley worked on many commercials during the 70s, one of which, got voted UK’s all-time favourite commercial in a 2006 poll.
His late brother, Tony Scott, also went into directing, making classic movies like Top Gun, True Romance and Man on Fire. Jake and Luke, his sons, both direct commercials and music videos, as well as his daughter Jordan.
How did Ridley Scott get famous?
The 1977 historical drama, The Duellists, marked his first feature film as a director. It went on to earn a Cannes Film Festival nomination for the main prize and won Best Debut Film.
Getting inspired by Star Wars, he accepted the job of directing Alien, the 1979 hit horror SF film. Sigourney Weaver played Ellen Ripley, switching gender hero roles and creating, along with the film, one of the most iconic SF characters.
His next big movie came as an adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the SF classic Blade Runner. Although the movie did not make it commercially in 1982, the audiences of today consider it a cornerstone SF piece.
Ridley received a knighthood his services to the British film industry in 2003.
