They intended to make the spelling mistake in order to avoid trademark issues with the Canadian band The Weekend.

In 2010, he met producer Jeremy Rose, who had an idea for a dark R&B musical project.

After a failing attempt to pitch the idea to musician Curtis Santiago, the producer played one of his instrumentals for The Weeknd, who started to freestyle over it. From there the duo started to working on an album together.

Jeremy Rose produced three songs, “What You Need”, “Loft Music”, and “The Morning”, including some more which were scrapped.

In 2010, he uploaded several songs to YouTube under his stage name, but his identity remained unknown.

The songs, which drew some attention online, and later included in a blog post from Drake, received coverage from several media outlets.

A year later, he self-released his debut mixtape, House of Balloons.

The mixtape featured several Canadian producers such as Illangelo and Doc McKinney. Featured on it, the tracks produced by Rose, didn’t receive production credits.

House of Balloons received well critical acclaim and became one of ten shortlisted nominees for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.

After the release he went on a tour of Toronto, where he gave his first live performance at the city’s Mod Club venue.

The Weeknd accompanied Drake on stage on several of his shows, often performing as the opening act.

Their collaboration continued with what later became Take Care, Drake’s multi-platinum Grammy Award winning sophomore studio album.

He contributed to five of the songs on the album, either as a writer or a featured artist.

People still didn’t know who is behind those songs, as he refused to do interviews and communicated only through Twitter.

Released the following year, his third mixtape, after the release of his first ever singles.
