Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Peter Hernandez, a singer, and Bernadette San Pedro Bayot, a singer and dancer. He grew up in Waikiki in a musical family with five siblings, surrounded by reggae, rock, hip hop and R&B.

His father gave him the nickname Bruno because of a resemblance to the wrestler Bruno Sammartino. From the age of four he performed with his family’s band, becoming known for his Elvis impersonation, and later took up guitar inspired by Jimi Hendrix.

After high school he moved to Los Angeles and added Mars to his stage name. He signed with Atlantic Records in 2009 after being dropped by Motown.
