Troy Carter’s net worth is estimated at $30 million as of November 2026, and it is a rough estimate. Around 2006 the music manager had a foreclosed house and a repossessed car, Wikipedia records, and in 2007 he signed Lady Gaga. The bigger money, on our numbers, came from early startup bets that Fortune said in 2016 made him the only investor in both Uber and Lyft. This page covers the music executive, founder of Atom Factory and co-founder of Venice Music, not the US politician or the physicist with the same name.

  • Bought a record label's catalog. He was reported buying the Pop Art Records catalog in January 2026.

How much is Troy Carter worth in 2026?

We estimate Troy Carter is worth about $30 million, within a range of $15 million to $80 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. We know which companies he backed and we know what Gaga’s tours grossed. We found no check size for any of his investments, no commission terms and no valuation for Venice.

Public estimates disagree because the names on his portfolio sound enormous. Being in Uber early says nothing about how much he put in. Our figure also counts this as household money where it can’t be separated, since Fortune noted in 2016 that his wife was Atom Factory’s chief financial officer.

How we got to $30 million

Treat every row as our assumption unless it says otherwise. The documented facts are the deal names, dates and tour grosses.

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Startup portfolio $24 million Our assumption: $50,000 average across 80 startups is $4 million invested, returning six times. Fortune counted more than 80 startups in five years. Six times is our judgment for a portfolio with Uber, Lyft, Spotify and Dropbox in it and plenty of losers.
Tax on portfolio gains Minus $6 million Our assumption: 30 percent of the $20 million gain ($24 million less the $4 million invested).
Lady Gaga years $3 million Tours grossed $411.3 million. We assume 30 percent reached the artist ($123.4 million), a 15 percent manager’s share ($18.5 million), half lost to company costs and a third of the rest kept after tax and spending.
Venice Music stake $10 million Our assumption: 25 percent of a company we value at $40 million. CB Insights shows no funding total or revenue, so this is the softest row on the page.
Pop Art Records catalog $1 million Our assumption. The purchase was reported in January 2026 but no price was published.
Spotify years $1 million Our assumption: about $1 million a year in pay for two years, halved by tax. He joined in 2016 and announced his exit in 2018.
Living costs Minus $3 million Our assumption: $300,000 a year for the ten years since 2016.
Total $30 million $24 million less $6 million, plus $3 million, $10 million, $1 million and $1 million, less $3 million.

Getting fired by Gaga cost less than the side bets made

Two tours sit inside the years he managed her: The Monster Ball grossed $227.4 million and Born This Way Ball $183.9 million, which is $411.3 million together. Run our assumptions through that and about $3 million reached him and stayed, roughly 0.7 percent of the gross by our calculation. Recordings and other deals sit outside that sum, and we have no figures for them.

The startup row after tax is $18 million ($24 million less $6 million). That is 60 percent of our headline against 10 percent for the Gaga row, six times as much. TechCrunch reported the split in November 2013 and pointed out he was by then known for Uber, Spotify and Dropbox. He puts his early stakes down to “dumb luck and desperation”, Fortune reported.

Nobody has published the size of what Carter put in, so our $50,000 average is a guess. For scale, TechCrunch reported that Cross Culture Ventures, the fund he co-founded, averaged about $250,000 across 34 companies. An individual angel writing a fifth of a fund’s check seems fair, and if his average were $100,000 the portfolio rows would double.

What we left out on purpose

We gave Cross Culture Ventures no row. The firm launched with a $50 million fund and TechCrunch said in 2019 that its portfolio’s paper value had grown 2,085 percent, but that belongs to the fund’s investors and we can’t see his share. A report from 2013 also had him raising $75 million to $100 million for another fund, and we can’t confirm how much of it closed, so that isn’t counted either.

Still writing checks in 2025 and 2026

CB Insights lists 58 investments and 31 portfolio exits. The dated ones show he is still active: theSkimm was acquired in March 2025, Belong raised a $1.5 million convertible note with him in September 2025, and Stance was acquired by Marquee Brands that November. In January 2026 the same database carries a headline saying he bought the catalog of Pop Art Records. Venice Music, which he co-founded after Spotify, runs a membership community for independent artists.

What would move the figure

A Venice funding round or sale would fix our softest row. Published check sizes would matter more: each extra $1 million invested at our assumed return adds about $4.5 million after tax, by our math. Any shares he still holds in listed companies move with the market, and we don’t know how many that is.
