How much is Vitalik Buterin worth in 2026?

We estimate Vitalik Buterin’s net worth at about $550 million. It is an estimate, because the main source is a public tracker of his known wallets and it cannot see private holdings or startup equity.

On-chain analysis put his holdings at over 224,000 ETH as of May 2026, worth about $530 million in October 2026, which works out to roughly $2,360 per ETH. His count has fallen over time: 662,810 ETH in 2015, 330,920 in 2021 and 240,010 in 2025 (year-end counts). In early 2026 he sold more than 18,600 ETH, about $38 million, for open-source software, privacy tools and security infrastructure, and he says he has not sold ETH for personal gain since 2018.

We add a small amount for stablecoins and tokens (a few million dollars) and a seed investment in StarkWare, a company valued at $8 billion in 2022, though his current stake is undisclosed. That puts a sensible total slightly above the tracked holdings.

The price swings are large. His visible net worth was about $2.09 billion at the November 2021 peak, about $300 million at the end of 2022, and about $1.2 billion in August 2025 when ETH was near $4,953. ETH fell to about $1,500 in June 2026 before recovering. Public estimates now run from about $467 million to $750 million, and we place ours just above the tracked floor.

How Vitalik Buterin makes money

Buterin does not run a company that pays him a salary, so his money is mostly the assets he holds.

  • ETH holdings: The core asset, roughly 0.20 percent of supply in 2025, down from a peak share of 0.91 percent in 2015.
  • Early investments: A seed investment in StarkWare, valued at $8 billion in 2022. His current stake is not disclosed.
  • Other tokens and stablecoins: A few million dollars in stablecoins and smaller tokens, including some he received unsolicited.
  • Donated windfall: In 2021 he received half of the supply of the SHIB token, burned about 90 percent of his share and gave the rest to an India COVID relief fund, a donation worth about $1.56 billion at the time. It is not part of his wealth today.
  • Grants and funding: He directs sales of ETH to fund open-source projects rather than using them personally.

What Vitalik Buterin teaches (and what to take from it)

Buterin’s approach to money and technology gives some plain lessons, in our own words, each with a step you can take this week.

Hold what you understand

His wealth sits in the one asset he helped design. Concentration can build wealth and destroy it, as his 2021 and 2022 numbers show. Write down what share of your savings sits in one asset and decide a cap.

Give early and on purpose

He donated more than $1.5 billion worth of one token in 2021 instead of selling it. Large gifts are easier to plan than to improvise. Decide a giving amount this week, even a small one, and schedule it.

Write to think

He is known for long public essays that work through hard technical problems. Writing exposes gaps in your reasoning. Write a half-page this week on one decision you are weighing, and send it to one person for a challenge.

Spend only what the plan funds

He says his sales fund projects, not personal spending. Separate your plan for investing from your plan for spending. Open a second account this week for money that is allowed to be spent.
