They are one of Mother Nature’s most extraordinary creations.
The view of tons of water flowing over a cliff, plunging into the river below, not the mention the sound. It’s dreamlike!
And it’s ironic, you know. If you want privacy, just you and your thoughts, many of us go near a waterfall. And silence is the last thing that a waterfall offers.
Still, it offers a calm feeling.
There’s something that makes them so awesome!
And these 10 waterfalls are some of the most breathtaking waterfalls you’ll ever see! Let’s get started!
10Godafoss, Iceland
We begin our top 10 with one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland, and also in the world.
The Godafoss Falls is located in the Myvatn district, right at the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland road.
With a water that falls from a height of over 12 meters over a width of 30 meters, the waterfall is nicknamed the Water of the Gods.
And some of the bravest photographers ventured to capture the best photos.
One of them, Anthony Spencer, shared his experience with us :
‘It took a marathon drive to get here and capture this incredible waterfall caked in ice. We knew it would be frozen and getting down to this viewpoint required a 30 foot downhill slide on our backsides only to be greeted by the sever spray from the cascading fall. With the temperatures at -15C you could get one frame off before having to spend 5-10 minutes cleaning the gear down of frozen spray only to try again.’
We continue our top 10 with Yosemite Falls, and there’s an interesting legend we shared with you.
9Yosemite Falls, USA
This is the highest measured waterfall in North America.
Located in Yosemite National Park, Sierra Nevada, California, Yosemite Falls measures a total of 2.425 feet from the top of the upper fall to the base of the lower fall, making it the 6th highest waterfall in the world.
This breathtaking waterfall consists of 3 sections : Upper Yosemite Fall (1.430 feet), Middle Cascades (675 feet) and Lower Yosemite Fall (the final 320 feet drop).
Here’s something that perhaps not many of you know about. The Ahwahneechee legend.
At the base of the waterfall there was a village of native people of Yosemite Valley, called Ahwahneechee.
They believed that the plunge pool at the waterfall’s base was inhabited by Poloti, spirits of several witches.

8Iguazu Falls, Argentina
On the border of the Argentina province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Parana stands the majestic Iguazu Falls, as the Izguazu River rises near Curitiba.
If the Iguazu Falls is next on your bucket list, you should know that the waterfall can be reached from 2 main towns, Puerto Iguazu (in Argentina) and Foz do Iguacu (in Brazil).
Another beautiful waterfall with another legend. The legend says that a God planned to marry a woman named Naipi. Naipi fled in a canoe with Taroba, her mortal lover.
In his wrath, the God sliced the river, creating the waterfalls. And the first European who found the falls in 1541 was Spanish Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca.
7Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Everybody heard of Victoria Falls. The famous waterfall in Zimbabwe.
Located in southern Africa, on the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls features a height of 108 meters (354 feet) and a width of 1.708 meters (5.604 feet).
Scottish missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, was the first European to view the waterfall in 1855.
And he named his ‘discovery’ Victoria, in honour of Queen Victoria.
By the end of the 1990s, around 300.000 people were visiting Victoria Falls annually, so it’s something worth seeing!
Angel Falls has a record. What do you think it is?
6Angel Falls, Venezuela
This beautiful waterfall located in Venezuela it’s the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall.
With a height of 979 meters and a plunge of 807 meters, Angel Falls drops over the edge of the Auyantepui mountain, Canaima National Park.
Considered one of the most important tourist attractions, Angel Falls is a bit hard to be reached.
In order to get to the waterfall, which is by the way located in an isolated jungle, a flight from Ciudad Bolivar of Puerto Ordaz is required.
Did you know that Angel Falls was an inspiration for the Disney animated film ‘Up’? Although in ‘Up’, the location was called Paradise Falls.
Also, the waterfall appeared in the Disney film ‘Dinosaur’ and in ‘Arachnophobia’.
Multnomah Falls is a MUST!
5Multnomah Falls, Oregon
This waterfall is a must!
Multnomah Falls, located on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, drops in 2 major steps, which makes it look even more wonderful.
The waterfall is split into an upper falls, measuring 542 feet and lower falls, measuring 69 feet.
It is the tallest waterfall in the state, but the thing that we find even more cool is the bridge, the Benson Footbridge, which is a 45-foot long bridge that allows tourists to cross 105 feet above the lower cascade.
This top list wouldn’t be complete without Niagara Falls!
4Niagara Falls, Canada
You don’t need more introduction. You know about the famous Niagara Falls, a set of 3 large waterfalls on the Niagara River, which are famous on the entire planet.
And those 3 waterfall are the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls.
This waterfall inspired many artists and film producers.
Niagara Falls began to be more visited in 1953, after the release of the movie ‘Niagara’, starring Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten.
3 years later, the TV animated series ‘Woody Woodpecker’ released the episode ‘Niagara Fools’.
Among other movies are included the 1980 movie ‘Superman 2’, ‘Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic’, the TV show ‘Wonderfalls’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’.

3Baatara gorge Falls, Lebanon
Discovered in 1952 by Henri Coiffait, this unique waterfall is located in the village of Balaa, between Tannourine and Laqlouq, in Lebanon.
Also known as the ‘Cave of the Three Bridges’ or ‘Three Bridges Chasm’, and the images show why, Baatara gorge waterfall drops 255 meters into the cave of Jurassic limestone, Baatara Pothole.
Because of its form, the waterfall can be seen only during March and April, when the snow is melting. Too bad!
2Plitvice Falls, Croatia
Founded in 1949, Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest national park in Croatia, and also, the oldest national park in Southeast Europe.
Added in 1979 to the UNESCO World Heritage, Plitvice Lakes became famous in the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in several Western films productions after Karl May’s novels.
And especially, the waterfalls. They were the most photographed.
The Large Waterfall known as ‘Veliki slap’ has a height of 78 meters, while Galovac Waterfall (or ‘Galovacki buk’) measures only 25 meters in height.

1Ruby Cavern Falls, Chattanooga
And we chose this to be our #1!
The 145-foot high underground waterfall named Ruby Falls is one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the world, and you can find it within Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga, Tennessee.
In 1930, the Ruby Falls received more visitors than usual. Why?
The cave was embellished with electric lights, making it more breathtaking than it was already. And that’s how Ruby Falls was one of the first caves to be so outfitted.
Some people even preferred to wed under the lights from the cave and the sound of the waterfall.
