Azim Premji’s net worth is estimated at $1.3 billion as of November 2026, within a range of $0.8 billion to $2.5 billion. The odd thing about Premji’s fortune is how much of it is not his. Partnership firms he leads hold close to 60 percent of Wipro, but The News Minute reported in 2019 that he had committed another 34 percent of the shares to charity, taking the endowment to 67 percent of Wipro’s economic ownership. Wipro’s own filing shows him holding 4.12 percent in his own name. This is a rough estimate: the filings show who holds the shares, not whose pocket the value ends up in.

How much is Azim Premji worth in 2026?

We put Premji at about $1.3 billion, which is far below what a headline holding of 73 percent of Wipro suggests. We value Wipro at ?1,75,303 crore, about $18.5 billion at ?95 to the dollar, the rate we use for early November 2026. That comes from a market note on the ?176.99 close on 4 September 2026, the latest dated price we found, so it is two months old. The share count in the filing, 990.35 crore, times ?176.99 gives the same figure to within a rounding error.

How Azim Premji built it

  • Switched industries early. Premji moved Wipro from edible oils into IT services, and it later listed on the NYSE in 2000.
  • Gave most of it away. He committed 34 percent more of his shares in 2019, taking his total endowment to about two thirds of his stake.
  • Handed over the chair. His son Rishad became executive chairman in 2019, while Azim Premji stayed involved as founder chairman.

How we got to $1.3 billion

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Wipro shares in his own name $0.76 billion Wipro’s 30 June 2026 filing lists Azim H Premji with 407,860,044 shares, 4.12 percent. At ?176.99 that is ?7,219 crore, or $0.76 billion. Documented, subject to the share price.
Economic interest in the partnership firms $0.24 billion Assumption. A 2019 commentary in Swarajya says he kept a stake of “seven per cent-and-odd” with his family, and family members hold 4.42 percent in their own names in the filing, 4.12 percent of it his. The remaining 2.6 percent or so of Wipro is worth about ?4,560 crore, $0.48 billion. We credit him half, because his family holds the rest.
Other holdings and cash $0.3 billion Assumption. Property, investments and cash outside Wipro are not disclosed. We allow about 40 percent of the direct Wipro stake.
Total $1.3 billion Sum of the rows above.

Only the first row rests on a filing and a share price. The other two are ours, which is why the range runs from $0.8 billion to $2.5 billion. We apply no discount for selling a large block, because the holding we count is 4.12 percent of the company, not a controlling block.

What 67 percent buys

Here is the sum that matters. By our calculation, 67 percent of Wipro’s economic ownership at the September 2026 value is 0.67 x ?1,75,303 crore, about ?1,17,450 crore or $12.4 billion. His own listed shares, $0.76 billion, are about 6 percent of that. In 2019 the extra 34 percent alone was up to ?52,750 crore, about $7.5 billion at the time, according to The News Minute, which put the total endowment at ?1,45,000 crore, roughly $21 billion.

That is why a plain stake-times-price calculation badly overstates him. Public estimates that count the whole promoter holding as personal wealth would be counting the charity’s shares as his. Others rest on a share price from one day and swing with every Wipro move.

The June 2025 reshuffle

The entities around Premji hold the bulk: the same filing shows Zash Traders at about 21 percent, Prazim Traders at about 20.6 percent and Hasham Traders at about 18 percent, with the Azim Premji Trust at about 6.5 percent. On 9 June 2025, the Trust sold 20.23 crore shares for ?5,057 crore at ?250 each, and DNA India reported that the buyers were Hasham Traders, Prazim Traders and a related company. That moved shares between promoter entities. It did not take them outside the group.

In January 2024, WION reported that he gifted about 10.2 million Wipro shares, worth around ?500 crore at the time, to his sons Rishad and Tariq. That cut his own holding from 4.32 percent to 4.12 percent, and the 4.12 percent is the figure still in the 2026 filing.

What would move the figure

Wipro’s price is the biggest lever on the documented row: each ?10 move changes his direct stake by ?408 crore, about $43 million at ?95, and our firm-interest row by about $14 million more (407,860,044 shares x ?10, divided by ?95; the share count is the filing’s 990.35 crore). A published breakdown of the partnership firms’ economic interests would replace our half-credit assumption, which is the largest in this page.
