How much is Brian Acton worth in 2026?
We put Brian Acton at about $2.0 billion. The pieces are a $19 billion deal, a reported stake of more than 20 percent, and more than $1 billion given away. How much of the Facebook stock he still owns is not public, so the rest is assumption.
Public estimates vary widely because nobody has published how many Facebook shares he kept or sold. Some assume he held everything and watched it rise. Others stop at the day he left.
How Brian Acton built it
- Walked away from unvested pay. He left WhatsApp in September 2017 and gave up about 850 million dollars in unvested options.
- Lent money to a rival. He gave Signal an interest-free 50 million dollar loan in 2018, due in 2068.
- Gave through foundations. He and his wife founded Wildcard Giving in 2014 and were reported to have given over 1 billion dollars.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp stake at the 2014 deal | $3.80 billion | Facebook paid about $19 billion in cash and stock. Forbes reporting, summarised on Acton’s Wikipedia page, said he held more than 20 percent. We use 20 percent: $3.8 billion. |
| Tax and costs | Minus $1.14 billion | An assumption: 30 percent of the stake lost to tax and fees on selling the shares. |
| Charitable giving | Minus $1.00 billion | The couple were reported in 2019 to have given more than $1 billion over their lifetimes, per the same page. Their Wildcard Giving network includes a foundation that reported $470 million in assets. |
| Growth on what he kept | $0.34 billion | An assumption: the remaining $1.66 billion grew by 20 percent over twelve years, net of spending. If it stayed in Meta stock the return would have been much higher. |
The rows add to $2.0 billion. The stake size is a press estimate and every other row is an assumption, so the range is wide.
The $850 million he left behind
Our calculation: $850 million divided by his $3.8 billion payout is 22 percent. He left WhatsApp in September 2017, a few months before his options finished vesting, and told Forbes he was giving up $850 million. The Signal loan is smaller: $50 million is 1.3 percent of the same $3.8 billion.
The Signal Foundation announced on 21 February 2018 that it started with “an initial $50,000,000 in funding,” created and made possible by Acton, who is its executive chairman, per Signal’s own announcement. Wikipedia describes Acton’s funding as a loan to the nonprofit Signal Technology Foundation. It is unsecured, carries no interest and falls due on 28 February 2068, so we do not count it as an asset.
Giving, in numbers
He and his wife Tegan founded Wildcard Giving in 2014. One affiliate, Sunlight Giving, reported grants of $6.4 million in 2015, $19.2 million in 2016 and $23.6 million in 2017. The latest documented figure we found is the 2019 report of more than $1 billion given. We found no dated 2025 or 2026 transaction with a dollar amount.
What would move the figure
Meta’s share price matters if he still holds shares, which no current filing shows. A disclosure of how much he sold would replace our growth row. Another large gift would pull the figure down.
