We put him at $48 million, with a fair range of $35 million to $70 million. The salaries are reported figures and teams do not confirm them, so this is an estimate. Our main assumptions are that half of his income goes to tax, agents and fees, and that he spends a fifth of what remains. He lives in Madrid and London and keeps a residence in Monaco, and no tax record is public, so that half could be too harsh. It is the biggest reason the top of our range sits so far above the headline.
How we got to $48 million
| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Salary, 2015 to 2020 | $5 million | About $12.5 million gross, and we keep 40 cents of each dollar (half to tax and fees, a fifth of the rest spent). Four seasons from Toro Rosso to Renault come to about $2 million: a reported $277,500 for 2015 and $750,000 for 2018, plus our $500,000 assumption for each of 2016 and 2017. Then $3.5 million for 2019, our pick between the reported $3.3 million and $4 million, and $7 million for 2020. |
| Ferrari, 2021 to 2024 | $20.4 million | $51 million gross at the same 40 percent: $9 million each for 2021 and 2022 (midpoint of a reported $8 million to $10 million), $14 million for 2023, $19 million for 2024 including bonuses. |
| Williams, 2025 and 2026 | $9.2 million | From $23 million before tax: a reported $10 million for 2025 and $13 million for 2026. Assumes the full 2026 salary is paid. |
| Bonuses not in those figures | $4.2 million | Our assumption: 20 percent on top of salary for 2019 to 2023 and 2025. That is 20 percent of $52.5 million, or $10.5 million, then the same haircut. |
| Personal sponsors | $4.8 million | Our assumption: $2 million a year for six years at Ferrari and Williams, or $12 million, reduced the same way. We found no published deal value. |
| Returns on savings | $3.8 million | Our assumption: $15 million invested on average over five years at 5 percent a year. |
| Boogie Burger stake | $0.5 million | Our assumption. He owns the Madrid restaurant with friends. No stake or accounts are public. |
| Total | $48 million | Rows add up to $47.9 million, rounded. |
What one season at the rumoured Williams price would do
Williams announced a multi-year extension on August 19, 2026, and it did so in a poor year for the team. The pay was left out. A Bola, citing the Spanish outlet SoyMotor, reported about 30 million euros a season, up from about 12 million, plus a performance clause that lets him leave early if the team misses its improvement plan. GPFans listed $30 million. Treat both with care: on August 18, the day before the announcement, GPFans reported that he earned 13 million euros and that talk of more than doubling was unconfirmed.
Here is why the number matters so much. By our calculation, 40 percent of $30 million is $12 million a season. All six seasons from 2015 to 2020 together add $5 million in our ledger, so one season at that price would be worth 2.4 times his entire first six years. If the real figure is $20 million, the same sum gives $8 million a season, still 1.6 times.
The Ferrari year that does not reconcile
Oversteer48 relays a Forbes earnings figure of $19 million for 2024, half of it from bonuses. Beyond the Flag, crediting Spotrac, gives a 2024 salary of $12 million. Those can’t both be exact: half of $19 million is $9.5 million, which leaves $9.5 million of salary, not $12 million. We use the $19 million total and do not add bonuses to that year.
What is clear is the shape of the career. The 2019 McLaren salary was listed at $4 million in one count and $3.3 million in another. By 2023 it was reported at $14 million. Then came a small step down, from $12 million to a reported $10 million on the move to Williams in 2025, before a listed $13 million in 2026.
The results are a matter of record: four wins, at Silverstone in 2022, Singapore in 2023, and Australia and Mexico City in 2024, and 29 podiums. He also became a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association in February 2025.
Why other numbers differ, and what could move ours
Public estimates that sit higher usually add up pay without taking out tax, or they treat the rumoured $30 million as already banked. We carry none of the rumoured new money in the ledger, and his contract is described as running at least through 2027. The pay figure in that contract is the biggest swing factor by far. Every $5 million of extra salary adds about $2 million a year to this estimate.
