How much is Charlie Munger Worth? Charlie Munger Net Worth in 2026
Our estimate, as of November 2026, is that Charlie Munger was worth $2.6 billion when he died on 28 November 2023.
He parted with about four out of every five Berkshire Hathaway shares he ever held and still died a billionaire. Munger was Warren Buffett’s vice chairman for 45 years, a lawyer by training, and the author of the investing rules in Poor Charlie’s Almanack. He died in a California hospital at 99. The figure below is his estimated wealth at that date, the last time it could be measured.

How much is Charlie Munger worth in 2026?
We put Munger at $2.6 billion at his death, in line with the widely reported figure. About $2.2 billion of that sat in 4,033 Class A Berkshire shares, which makes the ledger easier to build than most. The remainder is rougher: the range is $2.4 billion to $2.7 billion.
Public estimates disagree mostly because of that remainder: one widely quoted figure treats him as owning 3.4 percent of Berkshire, which does not fit a count of 4,033 shares, and others use a different share price on a different day. At roughly $547,000 a share, a single day of market moves can shift the stake by tens of millions.
How Charlie Munger built it
- Parted with most of the stock. He held 18,829 Berkshire Class A shares in 1996 and 4,033 in 2023, parting with about 79 percent.
- Stayed in one great company. About $2.2 billion of his $2.6 billion sat in a single Berkshire stake.
- Gave to schools by name. Gifts included $43.5 million in stock to Stanford in 2004 and about $23 million to Michigan Law.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Berkshire Hathaway Class A shares | $2.2 billion | Disclosure as of 5 October 2023 showed 4,033 Class A shares, The National reported. The stock closed at $546,869 on the day he died, which puts the stake at just over $2.2 billion. |
| Costco stock | $96 million | He sat on Costco’s board and held 167,615 shares personally, plus 19,565 in his charitable foundation, which we do not count. At about $570 a share, a November 2023 monthly price, that is $96 million. One report put the personal stake at $111 million, which implies a higher price than we found for that month, so we use the lower figure. Our assumption on price. |
| Daily Journal stock | $15 million | A post-death analysis from RationalWalk put his direct holding at 46,280 shares, and valued that plus 131,297 family-trust shares at $59.3 million, about $334 a share. At that price his own shares are worth $15 million. The article gives no date for the price. |
| Other investments, property and cash | $277 million | Assumption. We allow 12 percent on top of the three listed holdings ($2.311 billion), which is $277 million. He lived in Los Angeles and kept money outside Berkshire, but the details were never published, so this row is a guess with a wide range. |
The rows add to $2.59 billion, which we round to $2.6 billion. Our calculation: Barchart reported that he held 18,829 Class A shares in 1996 and the 2023 count was 4,033, so he parted with 14,796 shares, or 79 percent. At about $547,000 each, that is roughly $8.1 billion of stock he sold or gave to children, charities and others, nearly four times what he still held. Barchart’s earliest figure is 1996, so he may have held more before that.
The Berkshire shares he did not keep
Munger told Yahoo Finance in a 2019 interview that he would not sign the Giving Pledge because he had already moved more than half of his wealth to his six children. He also wrote cheques of his own: $43.5 million in Berkshire stock to Stanford, about $23 million to the University of Michigan Law School and a $200 million pledge to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2016. UCSB dropped his dormitory design in August 2023, and one report puts the amount he actually gave at over $125 million. His charitable foundation held another 19,565 Costco shares.
A law firm, a hedge-style partnership, then the vice chair’s seat
He started as a Los Angeles lawyer and joined Warren Buffett at Berkshire in 1978. By our calculation, his $2.2 billion stake is about 0.28 percent of the company’s roughly $785 billion market value at his death, as one report gave it. Another source puts his holding at 3.4 percent of equity, which we could not reconcile with the share count.
What would move the figure
There is nothing pending, because his estate has been settled privately. The latest documented event is his death on 28 November 2023. For anyone updating the number, a 10 percent move in Berkshire shares changes the stake by about $220 million. Berkshire’s price on later dates would change the figure for a current-value comparison, but this page is fixed at his death.
