How much is Jason Citron Worth? Jason Citron Net Worth in 2026
Jason Citron’s net worth is estimated at $1.1 billion as of November 2026. The Discord co-founder has never had his stake published, so every figure you read about him, ours included, is a guess at one number multiplied by another. The surprising bit is the second number: the last secondary-market price we could date values Discord about $3.5 billion below what Microsoft reportedly offered in 2021.

How much is Jason Citron worth in 2026?
We put him at $1.1 billion, with low confidence. Nearly all of it is one paper position in a private company. Discord has no public cap table, and neither the stake nor the price is official. Change the stake from 10 percent to 20 percent and the same method gives $853 million or $1.71 billion, so read the headline as the middle of a wide band.
How Jason Citron built it
- Sold OpenFeint for $104 million. The mobile gaming network he founded in 2009 went to GREE in 2011.
- Turned a studio tool into Discord. Discord grew from the internal chat tool at his game studio and launched in 2015.
- Handed over the CEO job early. In April 2025 he handed the job to Humam Sakhnini and stayed on the board as an adviser.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Discord stake | $1.07 billion | Assumption on stake, dated price on value. One ownership study guesses 10 to 20 percent and calls him the largest individual holder. We use 12.5 percent, the middle of the lower half, because Discord has raised over $1 billion. Forge priced shares at $31.31 on July 8, 2026, implying $8.53 billion. Pre-tax. |
| OpenFeint sale | $7.3 million | Assumption. The deal was $104 million in 2011. His share is not public, so we assume 10 percent after investors ($10.4 million), less 30 percent tax. |
| Pay as CEO, 2015 to 2025 | $2.4 million | Assumption, as Discord never published it: $400,000 a year for 10 years, less 40 percent tax. |
| Spending | minus $4.5 million | Assumption: $300,000 a year for the 15 years since the OpenFeint sale. |
| Total | About $1.1 billion | The rows sum to about $1.07 billion, rounded to two figures. Almost all of it rests on the first row. |
The cost of saying no to Microsoft
A July 2026 ownership study recounts that Microsoft reportedly offered at least $12 billion in early 2021 and that talks ended without a deal. That September, Discord raised $500 million at about $15 billion. Then the market moved. A funding tracker cites Forge’s July 8, 2026 price of $31.31, which implies $8.53 billion.
Run those through a 12.5 percent stake and you get our calculation: $1.875 billion at the 2021 round, $1.5 billion at the Microsoft number, $1.07 billion at Forge. The gap to the Microsoft offer is 12.5 percent of $3.47 billion, about $434 million on paper. Whether that gap stays open depends on the IPO, and secondary prices in thin private trading are a poor guide to where an IPO lands.
A second sum matters as much. Every percentage point of Discord is worth $85.3 million at the Forge price, so the uncertainty over his stake outweighs everything else he has ever earned. And none of this has been taxed. A sale at an assumed 23.8 percent federal rate would take about $254 million, leaving roughly $812 million before state tax.
A $104 million exit, then a chat tool
TechCrunch reported in 2015 that he had created the mobile gaming network OpenFeint and sold it to Japan’s GREE for $104 million. That sale gets quoted as his first fortune. It probably wasn’t one. We could not find his share, and his reference biography notes the deal came two years after the company was founded in 2009, so investors and staff likely took a big slice.
His next company, the game studio Hammer & Chisel, is where the bigger money started. Discord grew out of the studio’s internal chat tool and launched in 2015. A side tool turned out to be worth many times the $104 million company before it.
Stepping back before the bell
In April 2025 he handed the CEO job to Humam Sakhnini, formerly of Activision Blizzard and King. He told GamesBeat he would stay on the board and advise the new chief, and that hiring Sakhnini was a step toward an IPO, though he said there were no specific plans. Discord then had almost 900 staff and more than 200 million monthly users.
Bloomberg reported in January 2026 that Discord had filed confidentially, working with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, and that it could still decide not to proceed. As of August 2026 no pricing, listing date, exchange or ticker had been confirmed.
Why other estimates disagree
Public estimates use different stakes and different prices, often the 2021 valuation that no longer matches private trading. Few mention that the stake is unconfirmed, or that any shares he sold in private rounds would lower it. We found no record either way, so we assume none and note that it could cut the figure.
What would move the figure
A public S-1 would settle almost everything, since it would have to disclose major holders. Until then, the figure moves with secondary prices and with any listing. At $15 billion his stake would be near $1.9 billion. At a lower IPO price, it would drop along with the valuation.
