How much is Jimmy Wales Worth? Jimmy Wales Net Worth in 2026
Jimmy Wales’s net worth is estimated at $10 million as of November 2026. One of his best documented paydays came from a single edit: in December 2021, Christie’s sold an NFT of his “Hello, World!” Wikipedia entry for $750,000, and the iMac he used went for another $187,500. He gave the site itself away, and his work for the foundation has always been unpaid.

How much is Jimmy Wales worth in 2026?
We estimate Jimmy Wales is worth about $10 million, with a range of $3 million to $30 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. We can see a prize, an auction and a book, but his Fandom stake, what he earned as a trader and what he charges to speak are all private.
Public estimates scatter from about $1 million to well over $1 billion. The low end ignores Fandom and is years old. The high end usually confuses Wikipedia’s value with its founder’s, and a nonprofit’s value doesn’t belong to anyone.
How Jimmy Wales built it
- Gave the main asset away. He donated Wikipedia to a foundation, and his work for the foundation has always been unpaid.
- Built a for-profit sibling. He co-founded Wikia in 2004, and it raised $39.8 million by August 2014.
- Sold one edit at auction. Christie's sold an NFT of his first Wikipedia edit for $750,000 in December 2021.

Only the prize and the auction prices are documented. Everything else below is labelled as our assumption.
| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Fandom (formerly Wikia) stake | $7.5 million | Our assumption: 5 percent of a $150 million value at the 2018 deal. Investors had put in $39.8 million by 2014, and the 2018 terms were not disclosed. |
| Speaking and advisory income | $4.5 million | Our assumption: $300,000 a year before tax for 15 years. We could not open any published fee. |
| Trading capital and Bomis | $1 million | Our assumption. He left Chicago options work with capital from currency and interest-rate bets, and co-founded the web company Bomis in 1996. No amount is on record. |
| Dan David Prize, 2015 | $900,000 | The $1 million prize less the 10 percent that goes to doctoral students. We assume he kept the rest. |
| 2025 book | $500,000 | Our assumption. No advance was reported. The book has publishers in both the US and UK. |
| Christie’s sale, 2021 | $470,000 | About half of the $937,500 from the two lots. A portion went to his WT.Social project, and we assume half. |
| Tax | minus $4.85 million | Our assumption: 35 percent of everything above except the trading capital, which is $13.87 million. |
| Total | $10 million | Rough estimate. Any home in London, where he has lived since 2012, is paid for out of this total. |
The 0.03 percent payday
Wikipedia’s entry on Wales says he has joked that donating the site was both the dumbest and the smartest thing he has done, and that he once estimated it was worth $3 billion. Set that against the Christie’s result: the NFT at $750,000 and the iMac at $187,500 add up to $937,500. By our calculation that is about 0.03 percent of his own $3 billion estimate. Had he kept 1 percent of the site at that value, the stake alone would be $30 million, three times our total for his whole life’s work.
Not all of the auction money was his to keep, either. Stockhead reported that a portion of the proceeds would support WT.Social, the ad-free network he launched in October 2019, later renamed Trust Café.
The for-profit wiki that did pay
Fandom is the one business here with real scale. He co-founded it in 2004 as Wikicities, later Wikia, and it raised $39.8 million by August 2014 from backers including Amazon and Bessemer Venture Partners. On February 20, 2018, TPG announced an investment led by Jon Miller, with terms undisclosed, when the site claimed almost 200 million global uniques. Wales became co-chairman, and Wikipedia’s Fandom page lists TPG as the owner since then.
We don’t know whether he sold, kept or rolled his shares. Our $7.5 million row is a guess at their value either way, and it is the largest row by far even before tax. Recent news cuts against a high current value: the chief executive resigned in October 2025 amid reported revenue problems, and Jay Sullivan was named to the job on February 4, 2026. If the stake was held through that, it may be worth less than our number.
A late start as an author
The Seven Rules of Trust, written with Dan Gardner, came out on October 28, 2025 through Crown Currency and Bloomsbury, and ranked 86th on USA Today’s bestseller list on November 5, 2025. That is his newest documented income source, but neither total sales nor an advance has been published. Foundation work pays nothing, so outside income has to come from talks, this book and whatever Fandom still holds for him.
Two disclosures would change the page: his actual Fandom percentage, or a sale of that business by TPG. A 1 percent change in his assumed Fandom stake moves the figure by about $1 million after tax.
