In 1954 he met schoolmate George Harrison on the bus and the two became friends. His father, a trumpet player and pianist, encouraged music, and McCartney traded a trumpet for a guitar so he could sing while playing. He wrote his first song, “I Lost My Little Girl”, on that guitar.
He was influenced by American rhythm and blues, with Little Richard as an idol, and first sang in public at a Butlins holiday camp talent contest.
