Prince Rogers Nelson was born in Minneapolis to the jazz singer Mattie Della and the pianist and songwriter John Lewis Nelson. His father performed under the name Prince Rogers with a jazz band called the Prince Rogers Trio, and his son took the stage name from it.

He wrote his first tune, “Funk Machine,” on his father’s piano at age seven. After his parents separated, he moved between his parents’ homes. He attended Bryant Junior High and Central High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball, and he met Jimmy Jam in 1973.
