His father, a pianist and songwriter, and his mother a jazz singer, he received the name Prince Rogers, which his father used while performing with a jazz band called the Prince Rogers Trio.

He wrote first tune, Funk Machine on his father’s piano at the age of seven.

After his parents separated, he used to switch homes a lot sometimes living with his father and sometimes with his mother and stepfather.

He went to Minneapolis’ Bryant Junior High, after which attended Central High School, where he used to play football, basketball and baseball.

He continued to play basketball recreationally as an adult, and played on Central’s junior varsity team when in school.

Impressed by his music during music class, Prince met Jimmy Jam in 1973.

He signed his first recording deal with Warner Bros at the age of 18, and released his first album, For You.

In 1979, the next year, he released his second album which went platinum, as well as his next three records.

He continued to climb to success, showcasing his prominently sexual lyrics and blending of funk, dance and rock music.

In ’84 he referred to his backup band as the Revolution and released his most famous song, Purple Rain. The soundtrack album to his film debut is Purple Rain.

The song became the most critically and commercially successful release, selling over 20 million units worldwide.

After releasing two more albums, he released the double album Sign o’ the Times as a solo artist.

He released three more solo albums before, releasing the New Power Generation band in 1991.

Between 1994 and 1996 he released five records, before singing with Arista Records in 1998.

Two years later he started referring to himself as Prince again, after he changed his name to Prince and the peace logo, to remove him from the contractual obligations.

He released his final album Hit n Run Phase Two on the Tidal streaming service in 2015.

Today, although he died on April 21, 2016, from a fentanyl overdose, Prince is still a musical innovator. Known for his eclectic work, stage presence, extravagant dressing and make-up and wide vocal range he won several awards and nominations.
