Steve Baxter’s net worth is estimated at $45 million (US dollars) as of November 2026. Eight million shares explain most of it: he held them in 2007 and they were worth A$6.30 each when PIPE Networks was bought for A$373 million. That is A$50.4 million for a man who left school at 15 to join the army.

How much is Steve Baxter worth in 2026?

We put him at about $45 million, or roughly A$65 million, using the rate of US$0.697 to the Australian dollar on November 3, 2026. The money going in is well documented. What it has become since 2010 is not, because his investments are private and this one is a rough estimate past that point. Public estimates vary because some stop at the 2010 payday with no tax taken out, while others guess at startups nobody has priced.

How Steve Baxter built it

  • Started with six phone lines. SE Net began in a rented house and grew to Australia's seventh-largest internet provider.
  • Held the shares through the sale. After a 2007 placement he kept 8 million PIPE shares, worth A$50.4 million at the takeover.
  • Put his own money first. He committed A$6 million to the Beaten Zone fund, the largest amount from any investor.

How we got to $45 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
PIPE Networks takeover, 2010 $35.1 million 8 million shares at A$6.30 is A$50.4 million. Assumes he still held all 8 million at the takeover, which the reported combined payout supports.
2007 share sale $2 million Half of the 1.8 million shares the two founders sold at A$3.20, so A$2.88 million. The equal split is our assumption.
SE Net sale and Shark Tank fees $0 added Neither price has been published on any page we opened, so we leave them out instead of guessing.
Capital gains tax minus $8.6 million Our assumption: half the 46.5 percent top rate after a long-term discount, or 23.25 percent of A$53.3 million, which is A$12.4 million.
Returns since 2010, after spending and tax $17.2 million Our assumption: 3 percent a year for 16 years on the US$28.5 million left, which grows it by 60 percent. Kept low because startup money often goes to zero.
Total $45 million The rows add up to $45.7 million, which we round down to $45 million because the returns row is our softest.

The A$101 million check

SmartCompany reported in November 2009 that the two founders would share a A$101 million payday from the takeover bid. No report we found split it. But iTWire reported in May 2007 that after a placement, each founder held 8 million shares, together about 36 percent of the voting stock. By our calculation, 16 million shares at the A$6.30 offer price is A$100.8 million, which matches the reported A$101 million. So his holding looks unchanged from 2007 to the sale, and half of that payout was his.

That 2007 placement holds the one piece of bad timing. He and Bevan Slattery agreed to sell 1.8 million shares at A$3.20. If his half had been held to the takeover, those 900,000 shares would have fetched A$3.10 more each, about A$2.8 million in all by our math.

From six phone lines to a boat

PIPE was his second telecoms company. A profile on Yaro.blog says SE Net started in a rented house with six telephone lines and grew to be Australia’s seventh-largest internet provider before OzEmail bought it, just ahead of the dot-com bust. He then bought a boat and went fishing for most of a year. The sale price of SE Net has never appeared on any page we opened, which is why it sits at zero in the ledger, and why our figure could be light.

He left the PIPE day job in 2008 for a year at Google in California, staying on as a non-executive director. He returned to Australia to help finish the sale.

The assets kept growing after him. In 2025, TPG completed the sale of a business and fibre package that included PIPE to Vocus for A$5.25 billion. That is fourteen times the A$373 million, though for a much larger bundle, so it says little about what his shares would be worth today.

Where the money went next

Into other people’s companies, mostly. He opened River City Labs in Brisbane in 2012 and moved on from it in 2018. He joined Shark Tank in its 2015 launch season. He co-financed a US$1 million round for Go1 in 2015. Startup Daily headlines record a $1 million investment in Clipchamp in 2019, and Microsoft buying that company in 2021, with no price for his stake.

The latest dated money is the clearest. Asia Pacific Defence Reporter said on September 2, 2026 that Beaten Zone Venture Fund I, his defence-technology fund, closed at A$26 million with A$6 million of his own, making him its largest investor. Startup Daily had the original target at A$60 million in February 2025. That A$6 million is about US$4.2 million, or 9 percent of our total, by our calculation. It sits inside the returns row, not on top of it.

What would move the figure

The biggest unknown is the private portfolio. One sale from the seven companies in the Beaten Zone fund, or a marked-up stake from earlier startups, could shift our 3 percent assumption a long way. At 6 percent a year, the same US$28.5 million becomes about $72 million, near the top of our range.
