How much is Uday Kotak worth in 2026?

We estimate Uday Kotak’s net worth at $13 billion, an estimate built from a shareholding table, the bank’s market value and the October 2026 rupee rate. Public figures for him differ by several billion dollars. The spread comes from three things: which day’s share price is used, which rupee rate converts it, and whether a source adds family trust holdings on top of the promoter shares.

How Uday Kotak built it

  • Started small. He began with seed capital of under $80,000 from family and friends, and it became a full bank.
  • Kept the stake. His personal holding is 25.69% in September 2026 against 25.71% in June 2024, so the fortune rides on one company.
  • Sold only to comply. The 2020 sale of 5.6 crore shares raised up to 6,944 crore rupees and cut his stake to 26.1%.

How we got to $13 billion

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Kotak Mahindra Bank shares $12.3 billion The September 2026 shareholding table, as published by Tijori, shows him personally holding 25.69% of the bank, inside a promoter group total of 25.87%. Screener showed a market value of about 4.56 lakh crore rupees on 2 November 2026, so his shares are worth roughly 1.17 lakh crore rupees. At about 95 rupees to the dollar (the 30 October close) that is $12.3 billion.
2020 block sale, after tax $620 million In June 2020, Business Today reported, he sold 5.6 crore shares at 1,215 to 1,240 rupees each, up to 6,944 crore rupees, taking his holding from 28.93% to 26.1%. Assumption: about 15% went to tax and the rest was kept or reinvested, which leaves about 5,900 crore rupees, or $620 million today.
Infina Finance stake $40 million KF Trust, his family trust, paid 375 crore rupees for 8.99% of Infina Finance, Angel One reported, with the deal signed on 21 March 2026. Small next to the bank, but it is documented.

The rows add up to about $13 billion ($12.3 billion plus $0.62 billion plus $0.04 billion); the $620 million row is the softest. They leave out the cars, homes and art a banker this rich probably has, because none of it is on a public record.

A single stock with a very long tail

The odd thing about Kotak’s fortune is how little else is in it. Most billionaire founders spread out over a decade: a second company, a real-estate portfolio, a sports team. Kotak did not. He kept sitting on one holding, and the exchange filings back that up. The September 2026 table shows 25.69%, against 25.71% in June 2024. A ScanX report says that in April 2026 the bank said in a stock-exchange filing that no encumbrance had been created on promoter shares as of March 31, 2026.

Why the stake sits near a quarter of the bank at all is a regulatory story. India’s central bank has pushed private-bank promoters to cut their holdings over time, and the June 2020 sale was one such step, trimming the stake by roughly 2.8% of the bank in a single day, after a long standoff that ended in a January 2020 settlement with the central bank.

What one percent of a bank is worth

Here is our calculation. A market value of about 4,55,613 crore rupees means one percentage point of the bank is worth about 4,556 crore rupees, or about $480 million at 95 rupees to the dollar. His 25.69% is therefore 25.69 of those slices.

The same arithmetic shows how restless the number is. Screener shows a high and low of 466 and 345 rupees against 458 on 2 November. At the low, his shares would be worth about $9.3 billion at today’s exchange rate. At the high, about $12.5 billion. That is a $3.2 billion swing in the shares alone, a gap bigger than what most billionaires own in total.

The latest paper trail

The newest documented move is small. In March 2026 his family trust reportedly paid about 375 crore rupees for 8.99% of Infina Finance, a deal that took the Kotak group’s own holding in that firm from 49.99% down to 19%, so it stopped being counted as an associate of the bank. The April 2026 bank filing then reported no encumbrance on promoter shares as of March 31. Nothing in the reporting we found shows him selling bank shares in 2026.

What would move the figure

Mostly the share price and the rupee. A 10% move in the stock changes our estimate by about $1.2 billion. A further share sale to meet regulatory expectations would turn some paper wealth into cash but would not change the total, apart from tax. Anything that lifts the bank’s value, a large acquisition for example, would flow straight through.
