8Papakolea Beach, Hawaii
Located near South Point, in Hawaii, Papakolea is one of the 4 green sand beaches in the world, the other ones being Punta Cormorant (on Floreana Island, Galapagos Islands), Hornindalsvatnet (in Norway), and Talofofo Beach (in Guam).
The beach features green sand from a mineral called ‘olivine’, a silicate mineral containing magnesium and iron.
Olivine is also known as ‘peridot’ (maybe this term is more familiar).
Papakolea Beach is located about 4.8 km of Ka Lae, surrounded by pasturelands, and the only way to get here is either by foot or by a raised vehicle (Jeep, for example).
