How much is Kevin Systrom Worth? Kevin Systrom Net Worth in 2026
Kevin Systrom’s net worth is estimated at $2.9 billion as of November 2026, a rough figure with a wide range that depends on how many Meta shares he kept.
Instagram’s founder was paid about $400 million when Facebook bought the 13-person company in April 2012. If he had simply held the Facebook shares in that payment, they would be worth roughly $5.7 billion today. Nobody outside his family knows how much he kept, which is why this profile has the widest range we publish.
Systrom ran Instagram until he resigned on 24 September 2018. In 2023 he launched the news app Artifact with Mike Krieger, announced its shutdown in January 2024, and saw it taken over by Yahoo.

How much is Kevin Systrom worth in 2026?
We put Systrom at about $2.9 billion. This is a rough estimate with one known input, the price he was paid in 2012, and several assumptions. The central fact he has never disclosed is how many Meta shares he still holds.
Public estimates disagree because many are years old. One list put him at $1.1 billion in 2016, when Facebook traded far lower. Others assume he kept everything or sold everything. We assume he kept about a third and show how the answer changes.
How Kevin Systrom built it
- Sold at 13 employees. Facebook bought Instagram in April 2012 for about $1 billion, with 13 staff.
- Stayed to run it. He led Instagram until he resigned on 24 September 2018.
- Tried a new product. He launched the news app Artifact on 31 January 2023 and shut it in 2024.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Meta shares still held | $1.98 billion | Assumption. Facebook said it would pay about $1 billion in cash and shares, without giving the split. Wikipedia notes reports that Systrom received about $400 million, and we assume 70 percent of that was stock, priced at about $30.40 a share, which is about 9.2 million shares. We assume he kept 35 percent, 3.22 million shares, and Meta closed at $614.99 on 30 October 2026, per Yahoo Finance. |
| Shares sold since 2012, after tax | $760 million | Assumption. The other 6 million shares, sold over the years at an assumed average of $170, give about $1.0 billion before tax. We take off about a quarter for tax. |
| Cash from the 2012 deal, after tax | $90 million | The cash part of his payment was about $120 million on our 70 percent stock assumption, less about a quarter for tax. |
| Artifact and angel investments | $40 million | Assumption. Artifact was acquired by Yahoo in 2024 for an undisclosed sum, and no investment amounts are public. |
The rows add up to $2.87 billion, which we round to $2.9 billion. If he kept nothing and sold at our average, the total would be about $1.3 billion. If he kept every share, it would be about $5.8 billion.
The $400 million that became $5.7 billion
Facebook said in April 2012 that it would pay about $1 billion for Instagram, then a company of 13 people. Our calculation, with the stock split and share price as our assumptions: 70 percent of $400 million is $280 million, or about 9.2 million shares at $30.40, and at $614.99 they come to $5.66 billion. On those assumptions the other $120 million was cash, and the shares alone would have grown about twenty times ($5.66 billion against $280 million).
That is the whole story of the range. Meta stock multiplied several times, and the fortune moves with whatever he decided to sell in each year.
After Instagram
He left Instagram in 2018 and had sat on Walmart’s board from 2014 to that year. Artifact launched on 31 January 2023 as an AI-driven news app and was shut down in 2024, with Yahoo announcing in April that it had acquired it for its news products. It was a small bet relative to the Instagram payout.
What would move the figure
Meta’s share price moves our top row by about $32 million for every $10. A filing showing his actual holding, which he would only need to make if he were an insider, would replace the first row. Until then the honest answer is a wide range.
