How much is Kristin Hannah worth in 2026?

Our figure is $23 million, in a range of $15 million to $40 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of the money is documented. Beyond one six-figure Pan Macmillan deal reported in 2023, we found no published contract, so we start from copies.

Public estimates we saw range from about $16 million to about $80 million, sometimes on the same page. Much of that spread appears to come from treating book sales as author income and guessing at screen money nobody has disclosed.

How Kristin Hannah built it

  • Kept writing for 33 years. Her first novel came out in 1991 and The Women sold 1.49 million copies in 2024.
  • Took producer credit on Netflix. She served as co-executive producer on Firefly Lane, which ran for 26 episodes.
  • Sold rights before publication. Warner Bros. pre-bought film rights to The Women in January 2024, weeks before the book came out.

How we got to $23 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Books, all formats $35 million More than 25 million copies, per her publisher, at an assumed $1.40 a copy. The rate is our assumption: higher than we use for authors whose sales skew to old mass-market paperbacks, since her biggest sellers are recent.
Film and television $5 million Assumption: $1.25 million on average for each of four screen projects: Firefly Lane, The Nightingale, The Great Alone and The Women. Fees weren’t disclosed.
Tax and agents minus $18 million Assumption: 45 percent of the $40 million above, for income tax and agent commissions.
Living costs and property minus $7 million Assumption: $200,000 a year for the 35 years since 1991, including a waterfront home on Bainbridge Island. That leaves $15 million.
Investment returns $8 million Assumption: half of that $15 million was invested on average, earning 3 percent a year after inflation for 35 years. $7.5 million times 0.03 times 35 is $7.9 million. Rounded.
Total $23 million The rows add exactly.

The late surge, in numbers

Take 25 million copies over the 33 years from her first novel in 1991 to 2024 and you get about 760,000 a year. The Women hit 1.49 million by Circana BookScan’s count through December 28, 2024, per Publishers Lunch, which called it the biggest title of the year. That was a single title’s first 11 months. That’s about 1.96 times her lifetime yearly average, our math, and about 6 percent of her lifetime total in one book’s first year.

It started fast. Forbes Australia, citing BookScan, counted 829,115 print copies by June 8, which means about 56 percent of the year’s total landed in the first four months. Those are US print copies only, so global and ebook sales add to them.

Careers rarely run in this direction. The same Forbes Australia piece noted that her run of bestsellers came in her 50s and 60s, The Nightingale in 2015 among them, at an age when many novelists live off a backlist.

What the screen money could become

Firefly Lane reached Netflix on February 3, 2021 and ran two seasons and 26 episodes, with Hannah as co-executive producer. Deadline reported in January 2024, the month before publication, that Warner Bros. had pre-bought The Women. The Great Alone was reported as a TriStar adaptation in 2018, with no release date we could find.

The one with a date is The Nightingale. TheWrap reported on July 10, 2026, that TriStar moved it from February 12, 2027, to March 19, 2027, with Dakota and Elle Fanning starring. We haven’t counted any bump from it, and $5 million for four projects may look small after it opens. Pan Macmillan’s deal for The Women was described as six figures in May 2023, the only deal price we could find, and only in round terms.

Two dated events could move the figure. The film arrives on March 19, 2027, and her next novel, The Fire, is due in 2027. Each extra million copies at our rate is $1.4 million gross and about $770,000 after 45 percent. Five million more copies would add under $4 million.
