How Masayoshi Son built it

  • Bet small on Alibaba early. SoftBank put $20 million into Alibaba in 2000, worth about $60 billion after the 2014 IPO.
  • Borrowed against own shares. About 31 percent of his holding was pledged to lenders in December 2025.
  • Kept a third of SoftBank. He held 32.66 percent of the company he founded as of March 2026.

How much is Masayoshi Son worth in 2026?

We put him at about $45 billion. The share block is well documented and the debt against it is not, so the range runs from $40 billion to $52 billion. The top of that range is what you get if his loans turned out to be tiny.

Public estimates disagree for three plain reasons. SoftBank’s price swings by billions a week, so any figure more than a few days old is stale. His stake appears as anything from about 30 percent to about 34 percent, depending on whether his holding vehicle is counted. We use the listed 32.66 percent. At 34 percent the block would be about $2 billion bigger. And many estimates multiply shares by price and stop there, ignoring what he owes.

How we got to $45 billion

Source Our estimate What it rests on
SoftBank Group shares $52.1 billion MarketScreener lists 1,865,511,000 shares, 32.66 percent, as of March 30, 2026. Times the November 2 close of 4,410 yen, at 157.98 yen to the dollar on November 3.
Loans against pledged shares Minus $4.8 billion A December 2025 report said 31 percent of his holding was pledged. On today’s numbers that is $16.1 billion of stock. Loan balances aren’t public, so we assume he borrowed 30 percent of that value.
Side-deal debt to SoftBank Minus $2.6 billion The same report cites about $5.1 billion tied to Vision Fund operations as of February 2023, the latest figure we could open. We assume half remains after the 2025 and 2026 rally. This row is a guess with a dated anchor. His stakes in those vehicles, the assets behind this debt, have no public value, so we carry them at zero.
Woodside estate $0.1 billion Bought in 2012 for $117.5 million, carried at cost. We found no newer valuation.
Total $44.8 billion $52.1 billion less $4.8 billion and $2.6 billion, plus $0.1 billion. We round to $45 billion.

The market prices his company at about a third of its own sums

SoftBank reports what its holdings are worth after debt, and in June 2026 that net asset value was above 72 trillion yen. The market value on November 2 was 25.13 trillion yen, or 35 percent of it. The dates differ by months and the holdings have moved since, so treat the gap as a scale rather than a precise discount.

Now run his stake through both. At the market price he has the $52.1 billion in the ledger. At the company’s own June number, 32.66 percent of 72 trillion yen is 23.5 trillion yen, or about $149 billion at the same exchange rate. By our calculation that is a $97 billion argument between SoftBank and the stock market about what its portfolio will fetch. We side with the market for this page, because the market is the price at which a lender would sell his collateral.

A single trading day shows the sensitivity. The stock fell 71 yen on November 2. Across 1.87 billion shares that is 132 billion yen, or about $840 million on paper, in one session.

Twenty million dollars, then a lot of borrowing

The best trade of his life was small. SoftBank put $20 million into Alibaba in 2000, and the stake was worth about $60 billion after the September 2014 IPO, roughly 3,000 times the money. SoftBank sold it down over the following years, and a full exit in January 2024 booked an $8.5 billion gain. That cash belonged to the company, which is why it shows up here only through his shares.

He has also been through the opposite. He lost more than $59 billion in the 2000 dot-com crash. As a student he had sold a translator design to Sharp for $1.7 million and made another $1.5 million importing used game machines, which is a useful reminder of the scale he started from.

The side deals are the odd part of his finances. He personally took 17.25 percent of a vehicle holding Vision Fund 2’s unlisted bets, and by November 2022 he owed the company about $4.7 billion across those deals, with 11.1 million of his shares held as collateral at the time. We could not find a current balance, which is why that row is the softest on the page.

What would move the figure

The SoftBank share price, first and last: every 100 yen is worth about $1.2 billion to him. Behind the price sits OpenAI. SoftBank disclosed in August 2026 a $10 billion loan secured on its OpenAI stake, and a September 2026 report said Sam Altman had ruled out a listing this year while SoftBank was racing to deliver about $22.5 billion more before year-end. A priced OpenAI round or IPO would give that collateral a number. A disclosure of his personal loan balances would tighten our range more than anything else.
