How much is Peter Lynch worth in 2026?
We estimate Lynch at about $460 million. This one is a rough estimate: little of his money is documented after 2006. The base is a 2006 regional magazine estimate of $352 million, to which we apply assumed growth and subtract giving, spending and tax. We give a range of $250 million to $800 million.
How Peter Lynch built it
- Beat the index for 13 years. Magellan returned an average 29.2 percent a year from 1977 to 1990, against 15.8 percent for the S&P 500.
- Left at the peak. He resigned as Magellan manager in 1990 after growing it from about $18 million to more than $14 billion.
- Gave through a foundation. The Lynch Foundation had made about $80 million in grants by around 2013.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| 2006 estimate of his wealth | $352 million | Boston Magazine’s 2006 list of the city’s wealthiest, as reported by Wikipedia and Market Realist. The two disagree on his rank, so we use only the figure. |
| Market growth since 2006 | $419 million | Assumption: 4 percent a year for 20 years, which is $352 million × (1.04^20 minus 1) |
| Tax on the growth | minus $84 million | Assumption: 20 percent of the $419 million row |
| Giving since 2006 | minus $150 million | Documented: the Lynch Foundation had made $80 million in grants by about 2013, and the family gave $10 million personally to Boston College. We assume $60 million more since |
| Living costs | minus $80 million | Assumption: $4 million a year for 20 years |
| Total | About $460 million | $352 + $419 – $84 – $150 – $80 = $457 million, rounded. |
Total: $352 million + $419 million minus $84 million minus $150 million minus $80 million = $457 million, which we round to $460 million.
Thirteen years, 29.2 percent a year
Wikipedia entry says Magellan grew from about $18 million in 1977 to more than $14 billion by 1990, at an average 29.2 percent a year against 15.8 percent for the S&P 500. Our calculation: $10,000 growing at 29.2 percent for 13 years becomes about $280,000, while the same money in the index becomes about $67,000. Lynch’s own pay for running the fund is not published.
Books
One Up on Wall Street (1989) sold over one million copies. He co-wrote Beating the Street (1993) and Learn to Earn (1995) as well. Royalties are not published, so we have no separate row for them.
The foundation
The Lynch Foundation is valued at $125 million. It gave away $8 million in 2013 and had made about $80 million in grants since it began, and in 2010 it put $20 million toward the Lynch Leadership Academy at Boston College. The Lynches also gave $10 million personally to the college. Those figures date from around 2013 and we found nothing newer, so our $60 million of later giving is an assumption.
Still at Fidelity
He works part time as vice chairman of Fidelity Management and Research, mentoring young analysts. We found no dated 2026 money event, so the latest documented one is the foundation’s giving as of about 2013. His wife and co-founder of the foundation, Carolyn, died in 2015.
Why estimates disagree
Some public figures take the 2006 number as current or round up to a tidy figure. We grow the 2006 base at 4 percent, below the market, because a retired investor draws on his capital, and we take giving, tax and living costs out separately. Public estimates that ignore those deductions run higher.
