How much is Sara Blakely Worth? Sara Blakely Net Worth in 2026
Sara Blakely’s net worth is estimated at $550 million as of November 2026. She started Spanx with $5,000 in savings, built it for more than two decades and sold control in 2021. The usual billion-dollar label comes from that deal. Our figure is lower because reporting says the company’s profits have fallen and control has changed hands since.

How much is Sara Blakely worth in 2026?
We estimate Blakely’s net worth at about $550 million. The 2021 sale valued Spanx at $1.2 billion, and for years her fortune was quoted as roughly that. Two things pull it down. A deal valuation is not cash in hand, and 2026 reporting says control has passed to a credit firm that lent the company money. This one is a rough estimate: she never disclosed how much of Spanx she sold, so the split between cash and stake rests on an assumption we spell out.
How Sara Blakely built it
- Started with her own savings. Blakely put in $5,000 of savings and built Spanx for 21 years before selling control in 2021.
- Protected the idea early. She paid $750 to finish the patent application and $150 for the trademark.
- Shared the sale with staff. When Blackstone bought control she gave each of her 750 employees $10,000 and two first-class tickets.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Cash from selling control in 2021 | $0.6 billion | Blackstone’s release says it bought a majority at a $1.2 billion valuation and that she kept a significant stake. The share she sold was never disclosed. Our assumption: she sold half of the company, 50 percent of $1.2 billion, the least a majority can be. If the valuation included debt, the cash was lower. |
| Tax on that cash | minus $0.18 billion | Our assumption: 30 percent federal and state tax on a gain, since her cost was only the $5,000 she started with (30 percent of $0.6 billion is $0.18 billion). |
| Staff bonuses at the sale | minus $0.01 billion | She gave each of 750 employees $10,000 in cash, $7.5 million in all, plus two first-class tickets each, which we do not price. |
| Remaining Spanx stake | $0.15 billion | Our assumption. She kept the other half, $0.6 billion at the 2021 valuation. Puck reported that profits fell by nearly half and that control passed to a lender at a price that probably carried no premium. If the company is now worth half its 2021 valuation, $0.6 billion, her half is $0.3 billion. Debt ranks ahead of her, and we do not know how much is left, so we halve that again. |
Total: $0.6 billion ? $0.18 billion ? $0.01 billion + $0.15 billion = $0.56 billion, which we round to $550 million. We add nothing for her stake in the Atlanta Hawks group, property or Sneex, because no amounts are disclosed, so the estimate leans cautious there.
$5,000 became a $1.2 billion price tag
Blakely spent two years and $5,000 in savings on the idea, paid a lawyer $750 to finish the patent application and bought the Spanx trademark online for $150. Our calculation: $1.2 billion ÷ $5,000 = 240,000, so every dollar she put in was valued at $240,000 by 2021. Her first-year sales were about $4 million, then $10 million in year two after Oprah Winfrey named the product a Favorite Thing in November 2000. Both figures come from her Wikipedia biography.
The 2021 sale, and the $10,000 gift
Blackstone announced the majority purchase in October 2021, and Blakely became executive chairwoman. One report named Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Whitney Wolfe Herd among the new investors. She marked the day by giving each of her 750 employees $10,000 and two first-class plane tickets. That bonus cost roughly $7.5 million before the tickets, about 1.4 percent of our $550 million estimate.
What changed in 2026
Puck reported in July 2026 that Blackstone had sold its majority stake in June to the credit firm HPS, which had lent Spanx money in 2021, at an undisclosed price that probably carried no premium, and that Blakely had left the board to focus on Sneex, the footwear brand she founded in 2024. It also reported that profits had fallen by nearly half. We could not open the article ourselves and found no filing or press release, so we treat the story as reported by one outlet, but it is why we mark her remaining stake low.
Why other estimates are higher
Public estimates probably freeze the 2021 valuation, which would ignore the 2026 change of control and any tax on the sale.
Smaller bets
In 2015 a group led by Tony Ressler, including Blakely and her husband Jesse Itzler, bought the Atlanta Hawks for $850 million. In 2013 she became the first female billionaire to join the Giving Pledge. She also paid $162,500 in 2019 for Olivia Newton-John’s black pants from Grease at a charity auction.
What would move it
A sale or recapitalisation of Spanx under its new owner would reset the stake row, and Sneex is too new to count. The latest documented event is the 2026 change of control.
