10. Zodiac (2007) – $65 million
Zodiac was the first time Downey played a journalist – Paul Avery.
It’s the story of a San Francisco cartoonist who becomes an amateur detective obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac killer.
Initially the director David Fincher wanted to cast Brad Pitt as Paul Avery before he settled on Robert.
On the set Robert Downey Jr. was hiding mason jars full of his urine because he was so unaccustomed to the experience of both director’s multiple takes and the process of filming digitally. He even protested to David Fincher for “having no time to go in my shit together in my trailer”.
9. Due Date (2010) – $65 million
This is something different than everything Downey has ever done.
On Access Hollywood to promote the film, RDJ said that working on this film was his “most glorious experience” in his entire film career.
The story of high-strung future father Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) is forced to pair a ride with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay played by Zach Galifianakis, on a road trip in order to make it to his child’s birth on time.
Everything that happens after they hitch a ride is pure comedy. It is different to see Downey is a movie playing such a character.
Due Date gross a bit over $100 million and because of that is one of the most expensive RDJ movies.
8. Sherlock Holmes (2009) – $90 million
Directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Susan Downey, Robert’s wife, the movie scored over $209 million in the Box Office.
To prepare for the role Robert read many Sherlock Holmes stories and watched The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984) in order to learn more about the character.
The story of Detective Sherlock Holmes and his brilliant partner Watson and how they engage in a battle of wits and brawn with an enemy whose plot is a threat to all of England.
In the movie, Rachel McAdams, Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. reportedly did most of their own stunts.
7. Tropic Thunder (2008) – $92 million
In this movie RDJ was cast to play Kirk Lazarus, who according to him, Lazarus is based on a combination of Russell Crowe, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Colin Farrell.
Just like his character, Downey is a method actor and stayed in character as Sgt. Osiris/Lazarus even while cameras weren’t rolling.
The character portrait by Downey is a successful Australian actor who signs on for the Tropic Thunder movie who is a 5-time Academy Award-winning actor known for being a heavily method actor.
He goes as far as to get a controversial skin procedure so that he can play an African American.
First RDJ was very reluctant to take the role because he felt wearing the make-up to look African-American was offensive, but eventually he changed his mind because he liked the script.

6. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) – $125 million
The second and best part of Sherlock Holmes so far, because a Sherlock Holmes 3 is scheduled to release.
With a budget of $125 million the movie managed to gross a total of $186 million in the USA.
In the movie, Sherlock is forced to disguise himself in order to pass unseen, the idea for the disguise as a cross-dresser belonged to Robert Downey Jr.
In fact, in “The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone” Holmes is in fact said to have been disguised himself as an old woman, but we don’t know if Downey knew this detail or not.
In order to be able to do the movie both the director Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. were forced to drop out Lobo and Cowboys & Aliens.
5. Iron Man (2008) – $140 million
For you to understand how awesome Robert Downey Jr. is, you need to know something important.
First, during pre-production, Robert set up an office next to Jon Favreau’s office to discuss his role with the director and to be more involved in the film’s screenwriting.
Second, during the filming of Iron Man, RDJ would ask for many takes of one scene because every time, he wanted to try something new.
When Robert Downey Jr. was carrying out motion-capture work on the film, he would sometimes wear the helmet, sleeves and chest of the Iron Man armor over the motion-capture suit to realistically portray Iron Man’s movements.
4. Iron Man 2 (2010) – $200 million
The movie had a budget estimated at $200 million and managed to score a gross of $312 million, making it one of the most profitable superhero movies ever.
Because of Robert Downey Jr. recommendation, screenwriter Justin Theroux (Jennifer Aniston’s husband) got the chance to write the film’s script.
In order to better portray Tony Stark, Robert had gained 20 pounds of muscle.

3. Iron Man Three (2013) – $200 million

The post-credits scene was originally meant to have Stark blasting off into space to meet the Guardian of the Galaxy, instead Bruce Banner appeared in the post-credits scene as recommended by Robert.
