How much is Binny Bansal worth in 2026?

We estimate Binny Bansal’s net worth at about $1.5 billion. The ledger starts with three share sales and subtracts tax. The 2018 and 2019 sales have prices in the press. The 2024 exit is reported at $1.5 billion by one source we could not trace to a filing, and it is the row that holds the whole estimate up, so we show what happens if it is wrong.

How Binny Bansal built it

  • Started with $6,000. He and Sachin Bansal pooled $6,000 in 2007 and began Flipkart in an apartment.
  • Sold in stages. He took about $159 million in 2018 and $76.4 million in 2019 and kept the rest.
  • Backed other founders. He has invested in about 47 companies across 64 funding rounds.

How we got to $1.5 billion

Source Our estimate What it rests on
2018 sale to Walmart $159 million A 2019 trade report says he sold 1,122,433 shares for about $159 million in connection with the Walmart takeover, which bought 77 percent of Flipkart for $16 billion in 2018. The figure comes from a startup-data firm that warns its numbers may differ from official ones.
2019 sale to Walmart’s Luxembourg unit $76 million About 539,912 shares for $76.4 million, or ?531 crore, reported in June 2019. The same startup-data firm put his stake falling from 3.85 to 3.52 percent.
2024 exit $1,500 million His public biography says he sold his entire stake to Walmart alongside other investors, earning $1.5 billion, citing one January 2024 article. We found no filing or company statement that confirms it, and it may include the earlier sales. Weakly sourced.
Tax on all three sales Minus $260 million 15 percent of $1,735 million. Our assumption of the blended Indian capital gains rate.
Later investments $50 million He backed about 47 companies across 64 rounds and anchors a biotech and agritech fund. Stakes are not public. Assumption.
Total $1,525 million Sum of the rows above.

The three sales supply nearly all of it: $1,735 million before tax, against $50 million from later investments. If the reported $1.5 billion already included the 2018 and 2019 sales, we would be double counting $235 million, and the headline would fall to about $1.3 billion. With a 25 percent tax rate on top of that, it would be about $1.2 billion, the low end of our range.

What his 3.52 percent was worth in 2019 and in 2024

The 2019 sale cut his stake from 3.85 percent to 3.52 percent, according to the startup-data firm. By our calculation, $76.4 million for 0.33 percentage points implies Flipkart was valued at about $23 billion. If the $1.5 billion in 2024 was for the remaining 3.52 percent, it implies about $43 billion. That is 1.8 times higher in five years ($42.6 billion divided by $23.2 billion). The catch: Inc42 reported that his Walmart contract let him sell more than half of those shares by August 2020, so the 3.52 percent may not have been intact in 2024, which is one more reason the $1.5 billion row is soft.

The $1 billion stake that does not add up

His public biography says his 5.5 percent stake was valued at $1 billion after the 2018 deal. That sits awkwardly with the 3.85 percent reported before the 2019 sale, so we do not use the $1 billion. It also says Flipkart began in 2007 with $6,000 pooled with Sachin Bansal, starting in an apartment.

After Flipkart

He resigned from the executive team in January 2024 and has since fully divested, according to his biography. He has invested in BrightCHAMPS, Virgio, Flash, Hire Quotient and Glints, and anchored 021 Capital. We found no 2025 or 2026 sale or fund close with a price, so the 2024 exit is the latest documented money event.

Why other estimates disagree

Most public figures date from early 2024, before or just as the final sale was reported. Some count his Flipkart stake at its last funding-round value, some after tax and some before. Reports of the $1.5 billion do not say whether the earlier sales were part of it.

What would move the number

A filing or report that confirms what Walmart paid for his final stake would settle the biggest row. Gains or losses on his later investments, and any new fund, would change the small row.
