How much is Duncan Bannatyne worth in 2026?
We estimate Duncan Bannatyne is worth about $400 million, with a range of $250 million to $550 million. The earnings figure is well reported and Companies House confirms his control. The multiple, the debt and his outside assets are our assumptions, because we could not open the full balance sheet. We convert at $1.3414 to the pound, the rate shown on X-Rates on November 3, 2026.
Public estimates differ mainly because some are years old and because nobody outside the company has a price for the business. Valuing a gym chain turns on how much of the estate is freehold and what debt sits against it, so two estimates can sit far apart even when both start from the same earnings.
How Duncan Bannatyne built it
- Started with one van. He bought an ice cream van for £450 and later sold the business for £28,000.
- Sold and rolled upward. He sold Quality Care Homes for £26 million in 1997 and Just Learning for £12 million.
- Bought clubs in bulk. He paid £92 million for 26 health clubs from Hilton in August 2006.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| The Bannatyne Group | $410 million | £43.7 million of 2025 EBITDA at an assumed 7 times, which gives £305.9 million. A 2016 float plan was reported at £300 million, and that sale never happened. |
| Group debt | minus $40 million | Our assumption of £30 million. City AM reported £5 million left on the coronavirus loan at the end of 2023, fully repaid by February 2024, but we could not open the current balance sheet. |
| Assets outside the group | $30 million | Our assumption of about £22 million in property, cash and private stakes. He sold two earlier businesses for a combined £38 million, and we assume most of that went into the clubs. |
| Total | $400 million | About £298 million. We assume he owns all of the group, the filing shows at least 75 percent. |
What a member is worth
Tees Business reported on April 14, 2026 that turnover grew 6 percent in 2025 and EBITDA reached £43.7 million, across 70 locations including 67 health clubs, 45 spas and three hotels. Members numbered 219,743 at year end.
Revenue for 2024 was £149.7 million, so 6 percent growth implies about £159 million for 2025. By our calculation that is a margin of about 27.5 percent, and EBITDA of about £199 for every member on the books. A gym chain’s value is largely a bet on whether those members keep paying. The same report says higher employer National Insurance added £2 million to costs, and energy now makes up 11 percent of the cost base.
The float that didn’t happen
The closest thing to a market price is ten years old. Plans for a £300 million AIM float were reported in March 2016 and pulled that May. The nearest earnings figure we could open is £31.3 million of EBITDA for 2017, a later year, which puts the float at about 9.6 times. Apply 9.6 to today’s earnings and the group is worth £419.5 million, not our £305.9 million. That would lift the total to about $550 million, the top of our range.
We chose 7 times because the float never priced, and a chain of clubs needs constant refurbishment (one three-year programme cost £50 million). Each single turn of the multiple is £43.7 million, or about $59 million, which is why this number can’t be tighter.
Ownership is the other swing. Companies House lists him as holding 75 percent or more of the shares and votes, and trade reports simply call the group owned by him. If he held exactly 75 percent, our total would fall by about $93 million.
Vans, care homes and then a £92 million bet
Wikipedia’s entry gives the sequence. The £450 van grew into an ice cream business he sold for £28,000. Quality Care Homes sold for £26 million in 1997, and the Just Learning nursery chain sold for £12 million. In August 2006 he paid £92 million for 26 clubs from Hilton, a purchase more than twice the size of those two exits combined. Dragons’ Den, where he backed 36 businesses over ten years, brought the fame, but we found nothing to suggest it brought much of the money.
Dividends are hard to see. City AM’s report on the 2023 accounts mentioned none, so we add no dividend row. Pre-tax profit reached £14.4 million in 2024, far less than EBITDA, which is why we value the group on the earnings line and not on profit.
The figure would move on three things: a sale or float, the published debt number, and how his padel rollout pays off. He has promised further padel investments during 2026 in towns including Norwich, Basingstoke and Colchester.
