How much is Nandan Nilekani worth in 2026?

We put Nandan Nilekani’s net worth at about $970 million, with a plausible range of $0.75 to $1.2 billion. Public estimates vary widely. Some were set when Infosys traded higher, and some may count relatives’ holdings. We count him and his wife and nobody else, and we use a recent share price.

How Nandan Nilekani built it

  • Skipped the buyback. In 2025 he and other promoters declined to tender shares into an 18,000 crore rupee buyback at Rs 1,800.
  • Pledged half. He and his wife signed the Giving Pledge in 2017, committing half their wealth to philanthropy.
  • Backed young founders. He co-founded Fundamentum, whose third fund of about $200 million targets AI and fintech start-ups.

How we got to $970 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
Nandan Nilekani’s Infosys shares $494 million A shareholding table for the September 2026 quarter lists about 40.79 million shares in his name, roughly one percent of the company. At about 1,150 rupees a share (the price was 1,154 on November 2, 2026) and 95 rupees to the dollar (about the rate on 30 October 2026), that is about 4,700 crore rupees.
Rohini Nilekani’s Infosys shares $416 million The same table lists about 34.34 million shares for her, 0.92%, and TipRanks reported that she confirmed none are pledged, in a statement covering her holding as of March 31, 2026. The same price and exchange rate give about 3,950 crore rupees.
Other holdings and cash $60 million This row is a rough allowance for dividends kept after tax and his venture fund commitments. No public filing sizes it, so treat it as the softest line.

The rows add up to about $970 million. We leave out the 24.6 million shares held by the couple’s relatives Nihar, Janhavi and Tanush Nilekani, which the same table lists separately and which would be worth about $300 million on our price.

The shares he did not sell, at Rs 1,800

In September 2025 the Infosys board approved an 18,000 crore rupee share buyback at Rs 1,800 a share, a chance for large holders to cash out. Business Today reported in October 2025 that the promoter group, including Nilekani, his wife Rohini and Sudha Murty, would not take part. Our calculation: the stock was at 1,154 rupees on November 2, 2026, which is 36 percent below that Rs 1,800 price (1,154 divided by 1,800 is 0.64). On the couple’s 75.1 million shares, that 646-rupee gap is roughly Rs 4,850 crore, or about $510 million at 95 rupees to the dollar. They kept the stock.

Half is already spoken for

In 2017, The News Minute reported, he and Rohini signed the Giving Pledge, committing half their wealth to philanthropy. Our figure is before that giving. Applied to $970 million, the pledge means about $485 million is earmarked, and it shrinks or grows with the stock.

What is new in 2026

In July 2026 a report said Nilekani stepped down as general partner of Fundamentum, the venture firm he co-founded, while remaining anchor investor in its third fund of about $200 million, which targets consumer tech, fintech and AI start-ups. That is a change of role, not a sale, and fund returns are too uncertain to lift our figure.

What would move the figure

Almost everything rides on one price. Each 100 rupees on Infosys stock moves the couple’s holding by about $79 million (75.1 million shares times 100 rupees, divided by 95). A buyback he joins, a gift to a foundation, or a fund return would be the other drivers.
