How much is Ratan Tata Worth? Ratan Tata Net Worth in 2026
Ratan Tata’s net worth was about $400 million, or roughly 3,800 crore rupees, according to reports on his will. Tata led the Tata Group, one of the largest companies in India, yet his will lists only 3,368 shares of the holding company Tata Sons, valued at about 1,684 crore rupees. He died in October 2024, and the will that has been reported since is the best evidence of what he owned.

How much is Ratan Tata worth in 2026?
Asia News Network reported on his will, dated February 2022, and put his personal wealth at about 3,800 crore rupees. Outlook Business called a slightly higher 3,900 crore a conservative total. We use 3,800 crore. The rupee closed at 95.55 to the dollar on 11 September 2026, according to All India Radio, the latest close we could open, so we convert at about 95.5. That gives roughly $400 million. A wire report converted the same 3,800 crore to $444 million at the exchange rate of spring 2025, so part of the gap with older figures is only the currency. This is an estimate built from reports about a court filing, and we have not seen the filing itself.
How Ratan Tata built it
- Gave the shares away. The will sends his 3,368 Tata Sons shares, about 44% of his estate, to two charitable bodies.
- Owned little of what he led. His personal wealth was about 3,800 crore rupees while the group he led was far larger.
- Provided for people. He left money for staff, a fund for his pets, and loan waivers for two people close to him.

| Source | Our estimate | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Sons shares | $176 million | Outlook Business says the will lists 3,368 shares of the holding company, valued at about 1,684 crore rupees. At ?95.5 that is $176 million, about ?5 million ($52,000) a share. |
| Bank accounts and fixed deposits | $38 million | About 367 crore rupees in local accounts and deposits, per Outlook Business, plus just over 4 lakh rupees in cash. |
| Foreign assets | $4 million | About 40 crore rupees: Seychelles land, accounts at Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley, and shares in Alcoa and Howmet Aerospace, per Asia News Network. |
| Other financial properties and physical assets | $84 million | Asia News Network reports about 800 crore rupees of other financial properties, including deposits, financial instruments, watches and paintings. Our assumption: this is the total, though Business Today describes a one-third share of it as about 800 crore, which would be far larger. Part may overlap with the deposits above. |
| Balance of the reported total not itemised | $95 million | The itemised rows come to 2,891 crore rupees. The reported 3,800 crore leaves about 909 crore (about $95 million) that the reports do not break out. It presumably covers the Juhu house, the Alibaug bungalow and other shares, which no report values. This row is the gap in the reporting, not a valuation. |
| Total | $400 million | 176 + 38 + 4 + 84 + 95 = 397, rounded to $400 million (3,800 crore rupees at ?95.5). |
About a quarter of the total, the last row, has no itemised support. If it were zero, the estimate would be about $300 million.
Half a crore rupees a share
The unusual thing about the Tata fortune is how thin it is at the top. The will lists 3,368 Tata Sons shares in Ratan Tata’s name. At the reported 1,684 crore rupees that works out to half a crore rupees, about 5 million rupees, for each share.
Here is our calculation. 1,684 divided by 3,800 is 44 percent, so just under half of the estate is those shares. Asia News Network says most of the wealth went to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust, and Outlook Business says the Tata Sons shares go to those two bodies, which means the largest single asset was meant for charity from the start.
Where the rest went
Under the February 2022 will and its four codicils, Business Today reported that one-third of the other financial properties, about 800 crore rupees by its count, went to Mohini M Dutta, a former Tata Group colleague, and the rest to his half-sisters Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy. The Juhu house was divided among relatives and the Alibaug bungalow went to a family friend, Mehli Mistry. Smaller bequests covered household staff (80 lakh rupees in all), a 12 lakh rupee fund for his pets, and loan waivers for two people close to him. The executors petitioned the Bombay High Court for probate.
Why other figures run higher
Figures for his wealth swing widely. Some count the stake in the group as if it were a normal listed holding, and some are older conversions at a different rupee rate. The will does not support the high ones: it lists a stake of 3,368 shares at 1,684 crore rupees, and the whole itemised estate is 3,800 to 3,900 crore.
Latest on the estate
He died on 9 October 2024. The most recent documented activity in our sources is the reporting from April 2025 on how the will was split, with probate before the court. We found no 2026 filing that changes the totals. A probate order or a revaluation of the Tata Sons shares are the things that could move the estimate, as would a change in the rupee, which cuts the dollar figure when it falls.
