8.Cenote Sagrado, Mexico
One of the world’s most sacred sites is Cenote Sagrado, in Mexico.
Water is considered sacred in many cultures, and Cenote Sagrado is here to prove it. Known as the sacred well, or well of sacrifice, the Cenote Sagrado is created from a natural limestone cave, with steep sides stretching about 60 feet above the water line.
The well is located near the major Mayan archeological site Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula, people using it for cleansing themselves.
It was used for both ceremonies and for sacrifices. Items such as gold bells, masks, cups, rings, jade pieces, and human bones as well were found in Cenote Sagrado.
