How much is Steve Chen worth in 2026?

We put Chen at about $450 million. That is an estimate with a wide range, because he has never published his holdings. The low end, $300 million, assumes he sold most of his Google stock early and spent a fair amount. The high end, $1 billion, assumes he kept a slice of the shares through the later run-up.

How Steve Chen built it

  • Built the product engine. Chen served as YouTube's chief technology officer before the 2006 sale to Google.
  • Took the buyer's stock. The $1.65 billion price was paid in Google shares, and Chen's block was worth about $326 million at the deal.
  • Kept starting things. After YouTube he co-founded AVOS Systems and later the food video site Nom in 2016.

How we got to $450 million

Source Our estimate What it rests on
YouTube sale stock $326 million Documented. Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock on October 9, 2006, and Chen received 625,366 shares plus 68,721 in trust, worth about $326 million at the deal price.
Tax on the sale Minus $78 million Assumption. We take 24 percent of the proceeds, a blend of the 2006 federal capital gains rate of 15 percent and California tax. His actual bill is not public.
Growth since 2006 $246 million Assumption. The $248 million left after tax earns 3.5 percent a year for 20 years, which roughly doubles it. This is a deliberately plain portfolio return, not a known result.
Spending and gifts Minus $40 million Assumption. Twenty years of living costs, including a move to Taipei and two children, plus giving. The amount is our guess and nothing here is documented.
Delicious, Nom and other ventures $0 He bought Delicious from Yahoo through AVOS, started the food video site Nom in 2016 and closed it in 2017. No sale prices are public, so we count them at zero.
Total $454 million Rounded to $450 million.

Only the first row is hard evidence. The other rows are our assumptions, and we have said so.

The stock he may never have sold

Here is the sum that explains why no estimate is safe. Here the stock did the work. In September 2021, his stake was worth almost $1.77 billion, according to Wikipedia’s account of the deal. It is not clear whether that covers only the 625,366 shares or all 694,087, and we assume the main block. At the deal price of about $470 a share ($326 million divided by 694,087 shares, trust included), the same block was worth about $294 million, so it had grown roughly sixfold. If the figure covered all 694,087 shares the multiple would be 5.4 times, not 6.

By our calculation, every 10 percent of the main block he held through September 2021 adds about $177 million ($1.77 billion x 10 percent). So the gap between $300 million and $1 billion is mostly one question: did he keep about 40 percent of the original block ($700 million is about four tenths of $1.77 billion) or none? We assume none, which makes our figure closer to a floor than a midpoint.

Why published figures disagree

Public estimates usually start from the $326 million deal value and round it up, without tracking share sales. Others are years old and miss the stock’s climb. A figure that counted every share kept would sit in the billions. None of them has a filing behind it after 2006.

What he has done since

After the sale, Chen and co-founder Chad Hurley formed AVOS Systems, which took over Delicious from Yahoo. He joined Google Ventures in 2014, started the live food channel Nom in 2016 with Vijay Karunamurthy, and saw it shut in 2017. He and his wife moved to Taipei in August 2019. A Fortune article from July 2025, citing an analyst note, put YouTube’s value near $550 billion, about 333 times the $1.65 billion Google paid ($550 billion divided by $1.65 billion). He owns no part of it now.

What would move the figure: a disclosed sale or gift of Alphabet shares, or any exit from a private investment. Neither is in public records today. The latest documented events we found are his move to Taiwan in 2019 and the 2025 valuation article, and we found no 2026 fact about his money.

Why is Steve Chen’s net worth so uncertain?
